... just what the title says. does anyone know of an app. i carry my passport with my docs on it. and if i should lose i dont want my info in others hands.

app to password protect a external hdd

Well the most commonly used method for doing what you are wanting to do is to create a password protected encrypted disk image on your external drive using Disk Utility. A google search located a program called Ciphersoft from SubRosaSoft, but I didn't look at it myself since it is so easy to make a secure image with your Mac's built in software.
