Glad I am using a pihole with nextdns as the upstream dns provider. Scarcely an ad to be seen!

Good thing the search feature is easily accessed, I barely notice the ads. It'd be nice if someone made an app that could block ad content across the device!
Blocking adds is not right thing to do, most websites and service providers depend on adds for revenue.
Example Macrumors would close down if every one blocks adds, no ine will pay to read macrumors.
on Mobile devices game developers providing games for free would loose revenue.
I do like the idea of Apple giving more control on what information to share with each app, so that people can decide what is right for them.

I have become so disgusted with ads over the years, those ads I have managed not to block are products that immediately go on my do not buy list, especially products that have a celebrity attached to it. No way do I want to spend an increased cost so some spoiled celeb makes money. So go ahead, Apple, shovel me more ads for apps from companies I will make it a point to never purchase from.
this website makes money from adds, if there were no adds on this website would you be willing to pay to read/comment on macrumors ?

I've long justified my investment in the apple ecosystem because their business model wasn't centered on advertising, and making their customers the product. It was a "buy the thing, own the thing" situation (in as much as a platform dependent on innovation and software can be).

It was for this reason that I tolerated Siri for smart home voice commands, which remains a country mile behind Google, I explicitly don't like being a product.

I dislike advertising with such fervor that I use pfsense with ad host blocking for pi hole listed hosts, ad blockers, prevent my smart TV from having access to the internet, and completely sold out of the Samsung ecosystem explicitly for this reason.
It was for this reason that I guided my friends and family in this direction too.

If iCloud+ doesn't exclude me from this ********, I'm not certain where I'll turn, but it will be away from Apple.

Slippery slope. But things could be worse. Some of you bright young things won’t know about the sorry state of early DVD movie releases, where they forced you to watch adverts at the beginning. No skipping over those trailers, matey. Luckily, mine are all in landfill now. If I still had them, those forced trailers of dim and distant movies would just drive me nuts.

You can thank shareholders for this. Apple has to keep revenues increasing to keep them happy. Just the way it works.
Apple could increase revenue by doing what it used to be good at doing: bringing actual innovation. Sadly for many years has been releasing unimaginative products, that often were almost identical to their predecessors with improvements that are marginal to say the least (see the ‘new’ iPad Pro, iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8… ). Over time this is causing a decrease in profits that in turn is pushing apple to look for money elsewhere (ads), even if it goes against the whole privacy smokescreen and it cheapens the brand. What’s next, ads in the lockscreen or perhaps in the notch 2.0 (the so-called ‘dynamic island)?

You need a router level ad blocker for that. Pi-Hole, firewalla, stuff like that.

Thanks for the great suggestions. Will definitely look into those.

Do you think those will work with things like the App Store, where the ads will be more or less baked into the application straight from Apple who's also controlling the device OS?

Ads are the death of the apstore

As a a lone developer all it does is concentrate power in the hands of whichever company has more marketing $$$ instead of the app that is best.

As if AppStore search isn’t broken and manipulated enough already, we don’t need more ads.

AppStore should be a meritocracy.

It's not about caring for ads specifically in the app store, it's about whether this is gonna be a broken window and lead to advertisement everywhere in iOS.

I have never noticed the ads in the App Store
And that's exactly the problem. Most ads these days are disguised as recommendations or reviews, AppStore included. It's not that clear who is on main page thanks to quality, and who is there because they paid the money. This will be particularly bad when in comes to Maps and searching for food etc.
