I’ll take a Refurb over new any day. Refurbs have been gone through and checked to ensure everything is 100% correct. A brand new machine rolls off the line and out the door after a few tests.

Agreed. I can't remember the last time I bought a new Apple product. The refurb store is almost always the way to go. iPhones, Apple TVs, Macs, Airports (sniff...) - I used to buy them new, but now I go to the refurbished store first.

I absolutely love the refurbished 2015 MacBook Pro I'm typing this message on. Hopefully Apple will come up with a newer laptop that's actually worth buying before I need to replace this one. :D

Same here. I've found their refurbs to be indistinguishable from a new one except for the box. I also buy open box items from local retailers if the equipment looks good since they still have an Apple warranty.

Apple just replaced my 2015 MBP with a new 2018 and while I like the 2018 I also loved my 2015; especially the keyboard. That said the new keyboard is pretty nice once you get used to its feel.

Warrenty is a must with broken keyboard in the past and throttle issue as well. Who knows...maybe “liquid” issues.

I used a 2017 MBP for about three weeks (my 2015 was in the shop and for some reason the Apple Store was having trouble sourcing a particular part). I never had any problem with the keys getting stuck or not working... but I just couldn't get past a strong dislike for the low-travel keyboard - not good, given I am writing code or otherwise typing 8+ hours a day. :p

Still not interested. Design is too flawed. Won't be surprised when these all die from warped logic boards in three years.

Agree 100%. All refurbs come with an Apple one year warranty, same warranty as any new Apple product. And refurbs have been looked over head to toe by an Apple technician here in the U.S. before they're resold. Any issues, updates, whatever, and they're fixed to like-new standards then packaged in a new box with all the stuff a new MacBook comes with. I've always purchased refurb Apple products and never had one single issue. They are a much better deal than buying new, IMO.

Fully agree. I had to get a new keytop this year for my 2013 fully loaded MBA (I'd literally worn off a lot of the keytops and one stuck), but with that (and I ended up getting it for $20 thanks to a kind genius), it's running like brand new.

[which is good since I'm still not sold on the MBP KB even in this third maybe-crumb-resistant generation and I'm worried the MBA replacement is going to have the same kind of feel and potential issues to comply with Apple's thin to win design aesthetic. but that's another story ain't it, and hopefully we'll know what's to be in 10 days]

I really hope they will produce a better machine in 2019. I would like to buy one, but not gonna buy the current crippled version

I've wanted a new maxxed MBP level notebook for five years.

Add a quarter mm of travel and get the low power DDR4 Ram in 2019 and maybe we'll be finally talking. But I'm not doing as much photo editing as I used to, so an upgraded MBA class machine with 16GB a new CPU and a TB SSD might do me fine at this point.... ...anyway they have entry points if they want my money, but I'll just keep up with my old guy otherwise. Not dropping thousands on a pig in a (keyboard and Intel bottleneck) poke.

A pro update?? Seriously? Apple just did a pro update six months ago. The event at the end of October is about iPads and the new MacBook Air, not the MBP's.
For the last time. There is no reason why Apple will refresh the air. The air and the name shouldn’t even exist i n 2018.

I have a 2014/15 MBPr. Would love to have the 2018 but have a feeling the 2019 is going to be really good after all the complaints of the 2018. And I do not want that TouchBar.
I agree. I skipped the 2016 pro after i kept hearing keyboard complaints, it got better in 2018 and I believe the 2019s (hopefully) has the kinks sorted out.

Yes, the extra $100-$200 is nice but items usually take 6 months to appear in the refurb store, yes?
Obviously not

Yes, I know. Many people seem to assume warranty is somehow reduced if it is not purchased from Apple.
Legally not true, but in practice take two similar devices and you have a better chance of a warranty being honoured at an Apple store. Then take a device that is out of warranty and that gap will widen, I would fancy my chances a lot better for a device that is out of warranty at an Apple store than anywhere else.

When purchasing CTO models from at least some 3rd parties (e.g., Amazon Prime), the warranty begins when the product was originally shipped to the 3rd party, not when it was shipped or received by the end-user, which could be months later. (Or years later for out-dated models.) If buying CTO from a 3rd party, be sure to find out when the warranty begins or began. If you can get the serial number of an already-built device, you can look up the warranty yourself on apple.com

This isn't accurate. The warranty on Apple's site will show the date the machine was shipped to the retailer, but if you share your purchase receipt with Apple they will update it to match when you purchased the machine from the retailer. Apple's warranty period starts 1 year after purchase from an authorized reseller.

Link? I can’t find it
He's probably talking about the video where Rossman talks about the older MacBook Pro motherboards that Apple recalled/refurbished and did a crappy job on the soldering/component replacement.

Apple doesn't do repairs like that on the computers they sell as refurbished.

How much interest are you earning off $2000 (minus $110/month) over 18 months to make it even worth it?

Yeah that video,

Are you sure? Since they do replacement with refurb

Too late. I’ve been a MacFanBoy for decades but Johnny, your recent MBP drove me over the edge. I just got a Lenovo P72. It will hold 128Gb of DRAM, RAID0 m2 drives of my choice, a second SSD for data and a 17” full HD screen. About the same as a loaded MBP but better CPU, 4x the potential memory, way better HD options, I can replace the battery and I don’t give a flying F#$%@^ about the thickness or weight. I want a portable workstation. I’m not making a fashion statement I’m trying to get work done. Good luck Apple.... you are going to need it.

I’ve been seeing nothing but failures with MacBook keyboards since the redesign at my workplace. I’m sure 2018 will be the same it will just take a bit longer. I’ve been typing on them for months now and absolutely hate this new keyboard design. Along with apples continuing hostile attitude toward repairing your own stuff. They’re done getting my cash.

That's exactly what I started doing. People tend to confuse "used" with "refurbished". Refurbished are pretty much as good as brand new, at least from my experience. It is cheaper because technically have lost the title "brand new" for many possible reasons.
