Apple Pay fails on the first try, 95% of the time

The screen shows my card, and the little animation for reading the fingerprint plays, but then it buzzes rather than show the checkmark. On the second try it usually works fine. Although one time it completely locked up Touch ID I had to reboot before I could use the fingerprint sensor for anything.

This has been happening throughout ios10 betas on my iPhone 6 and makes the experience feel way clunkier.

I'm pretty sure it's not user error / faulty sensor hardware as Touch ID works for unlocking pretty much every time.

Anyone else experiencing this or have any troubleshooting advice?

I've used Apple Pay almost daily on iOS 10 and haven't had a single issue with it thus far. Is this happening anywhere you go or does it seem to be happening at one specific place?

I had two incidents where I clearly heard the beep and iPhone notified me the transaction. Then the terminal said transaction failed. I have to try again.

And both time resulted double posting. Luckily though, I disputed the transaction and my bank refunded me.

But I would say Apple Pay works 99% of time.

You may want to try double-clicking on the home button to bring up the Apple Pay interface, then scan to pay that way.

thats how i was initiating apple pay originally, but i had the problem even then, and occasionally it would load the apple pay screen (so i know i'd double tapped) and read my fingerprint, but rather than use it for the transaction, it would then unlock to the home screen.

trying to avoid a full restore, as my bank makes a big deal whenever i re-add my cards, sending multiple verification letters for each card i add. but i might have no choice. :(

Edit: on a lark i did try the double tap route you suggested, and its actually worked on the first the last two times i've attempted. So I'll see if this suggestion continues to work, thanks!

The gotcha of course, is now for whatever reason double tapping to bring up the interface seems glitchy. if i go too fast, it just sits on the lock screen, and if i go too slow, it just unlocks the phone. sigh.

I wish there were bluetooth beacons on a larger scale in stores that use Apple Pay and I could get a ping that Apple Pay is available. Discovery is pretty weak right now. And a lot of times the awkward standing at the card reader to find out if Apple Pay works or not is not so fun. But when I've used it it's been pretty reliable. I can't wait until it's ubiquitous and we can use it everywhere.

I used ApplePay a few days ago, for lunch, for the first time ever!

(On my Apple Watch, no less!)

    Yay me! :)

    That's slightly concerning.

With these being relatively low value transactions, some people may not notice the occasional double charge.
