The Apple Retail store I went to had their Pencils stolen from the iPad Pro display devices. They didn't tie the Pencils down. There were a couple without the keyboard covers too. I didn't ask if those were stolen.

When I picked up my ipad this morning I noted 2 pencils on the tables for trial without tethers, just resting in a little tray to the side. I knew they'd be gone almost instantly.

Went to one of the biggest Apple stores in my area and they had all configs of the iPad Pro in stock after the initial pre-order rush. Only one smart keyboard out on the demo table and one pencil. They were keeping very close watch on the pencil as they knew people would try to steal it. Especially since there were none to buy. The salesperson I worked with said they had two for demo, but were only putting one of them out until they have a better solution. They only received 4 or 5 pencils and the first people to order for pick-up got them. Same with the smart keyboards.

I may be derailing the thread, but after playing with the iPad Pro for a good half hour and probably spending about 10 minutes on the unit with the pencil, I can just say that I can't wait to get mine! I left the store with a 128GB Space Gray WiFi only model. And it's naked for now... :/

How did Apple not have a pencil/Ipad Pro demo presentation table setup ready to go for each store?

I wanted to snatch one at Chicago's Lincoln Park store after I was forced to wait over an hour and a half for a web order I placed at 3:54am CST, and designated in store pickup. Then throughout the torturous wait, I was asked to stand by the iPad Pro display, where each Pro wash lavished with it's own Pencil that surprisingly no one could buy. Alas my freedom was much more appealing than the pencil, especially after watching one fall to the floor causing the cap to pop off and fly midway across the store.
…thoughts wandering...
On another note, where does Apple expect people to store these huge white instruments when they are unleashed to the public? Worst, I wonder how many replacement caps I'll blow throw while the originals are lost during the recharge process. The cap seems appealing enough to gnaw on, but not that mag safe conductor underneath.

Serves them right.

I'd definitely agree Apple handled the whole Pencil thing very badly; stealing isn't right, but it's not surprising it happened. Here's to hoping they'll have more stocks soon. I'm actually half expecting Tim Cook to make a public apology.

Did anyone in the U.S. really manage to get a Pencil so far?

What's strange is that it could happen in the first place. Wouldn't there be a plan in place at the top level to handle Pencils in retail store displays? Like, wouldn't it come with a "kit" of some kind from Apple that includes a mechanism to secure the Pencil? I doubt the individual stores were supposed to go to the hardware store and just buy some chain. I can't figure out who dropped the ball, or what sport they were playing.

This is of course just forum rumor, but someone posted that "an employee told them" the in-store pickup availability for accessories was a system glitch and they weren't supposed to be sold to anyone today. Anyone who got one just got lucky. I'd check the stores over the next few days because I don't think the primary retail shipment of accessories has actually arrived yet.

I noticed that too at the apple stored. It was pretty easy to take it if I really wanted to. Plus they only have like 3 pencils. 15 pros

I'm quite sure it wasn't their intention to have a shortage like this. Things go wrong for one reason or another. I'm bummed out I didn't get a pencil today, but it's not the end of the world. Let's all take a breath here and cut Apple some slack. They released an amazing product we've all been excited about for a couple of years now.

I dunno, between the misinformation and lack of proper display units, it really feels like the stores weren't prepared for launch. Perhaps there was a computer snafu that caused things to be released prematurely?

Angela Ahrendts has her share of defenders on this forum (it is still unknown what if any pull she has in determining product inventory for product launches) but the plan (or lack of one) for how the Pencil would be presented/secured clearly falls on her shoulders.
