Apple yesterday announced several improvements to Apple Podcasts, including video podcast playback on macOS and a fully redesigned tvOS app.

Mac users will gain a new, enhanced video podcast experience in Apple Podcasts, including Picture in Picture support for watching episodes while multitasking. The update brings the full mobile Apple Podcasts experience to the Mac, with audio and video content alongside transcripts, timed links, and chapters.

The Apple Podcasts app on tvOS is receiving a complete redesign with video podcast playback, a new sidebar navigation for easier browsing, and support for podcast creators' episode and show artwork. The update is aimed at making it simpler to discover and enjoy video content on the big screen.

Across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, as well as on the web at podcasts.apple.com, Apple is also adding a new search within show feature. The tool allows users to search directly within a show from its See All Episodes view, making it easier to locate a specific episode without scrolling through an entire back catalog.

The updates will arrive this fall as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, visionOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and tvOS 27.

This is of particular use to me as my podcast host is adding Apple video podcast playback this summer so yay.

Does anyone know if the up next queue now syncs across devices? That’s been my biggest pain point keeping me away from the native app.

I had not clocked that they were still not supporting video podcasts on the mac. I could have sworn that I'd seen video podcasts on iTunes more than 15 years ago. I thought I had some on my iPod Classic.

and for this they dropped support for the one I have.

don't actually subscribe to any streamers any more, so unlikely to buy a new one. even podcasts better played on phone and airplayed to my rpi5 running kodi... i think last night's keynote was the first 4K content i've watched on it in months. but a better podcasts app would at least have been something.

Great, but did they fix years old bug that prevents the app from remembering window size and position?

They’ve been really building out the Podcast app just for me lately.

I mainly stick to it because of the search functionality I’ve not found in any other app (the ability to search individual episodes and not just show titles/descriptions), and being able to further narrow searches to specific shows is great.

My only gripe is that I’d like to be able to just fully block shows the way you can block publications in News. There are a ton of shows I see in the New tab that I will never listen to.

That is the main reason I don't use it. I find it ok for new episodes syncing but older episodes that I have in my library it doesn't work so well

Videos?!? FINALLY!

So same videos as what’s posted on YouTube so now I don’t have to go to goog-owned YouTube for the pod videos? AWESOME!

Hopefully it still work while keeping Siri/ai turned off.

why do I need a whole new os to see videos in my podcasts?

surely that's just an update to the podcast software.

looks like apple is making excuses for people to need to upgrade

also where is my new atv?

Nice. I remember enjoying several video podcasts in 2005-2008, before the video functionality disappeared and became audio-only. Glad to hear they're catching up to twenty years ago lol

Thought it already had it but looks like that was only iOS. Good to know it's coming to macOS but they need to make it seamless to add HLS for creators.
