Because its just a case plus a battery. Even $99 for the older Smart Battery Case was steep, but $129 IS absurd!

I don't necessarily disagree that $129 is too much money for what it is, but my main point is that people are blaming Apple for being expensive and "losing touch with reality" when the fact is that this pricing is not unique to Apple, it's in line with other hardware manufacturers selling the same sort of accessory at a comparable level of quality.

$129 is a rip for effectively a silicone case and battery pack -- no question

But Mophie's are usually $100, so if you want a silicone case ($39) AND a battery pack and to not have to pick and choose, I'm sure many could rationalize it

Was anyone not expecting this price?

Apple today released new Smart Battery Cases designed for its 2018 iPhone lineup, including the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Available in black or white, each Smart Battery Case is priced at $129 and is designed to add extra battery life to the iPhone. The cases are similar in design to the past battery case option Apple offered for the iPhone 7, with a bump at the back to house a battery pack.

Each case provides a varying amount of battery life depending on device. The iPhone XS Battery Case, when paired with the iPhone XS, offers up to 33 hours of talk time, up to 21 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XS Max with the XS Max Smart Battery Case offers up to 37 hours of talk time, up to 20 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XR with the XR Battery Case offers up to 39 hours of talk time, up to 22 hours of internet use, and up to 27 hours of video playback.

Apple has not offered a Smart Battery Case option for the iPhone since the introduction of the iPhone 7, presumably due to the wireless charging feature in the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. There has also never been a battery case for larger iPhones, with prior cases limited to the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 7.

Rumors in December, however, suggested that a version compatible with Qi-wireless charging was in the works, and Apple's product listings confirm that the new Smart Battery Cases are indeed compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers.

As with the previous versions of the Smart Battery Case, the new options provide an intelligent battery status on the iPhone's Lock screen and in Notification Center so you're aware of the remaining charge of the device.

The cases charge wirelessly as mentioned above or via Lightning and Apple says faster charging is available using USB-PD compatible chargers. Lightning accessories, like the EarPods with Lightning Connector, are also compatible.

I'm wondering did they make the battery pack slim enough to still work with the Qi sensors built in the iPhone... or did they add additional ones to this smart case?

NEED a teardown

I just wish these things would let the phone go down to 90% first, then use the external battery.

Would help the life of the internal phone battery.

I'd like to know why they can't just make a phone that does NOT need to have this extra battery case added??? I don't use a case and do NOT want to start using one now. This will ruin the looks of my SX MAX in GOLD

Who really needs this....is it that hard to find opportunities to charge during the day. A small battery back is a much more cost effective solution.
It is really nice if you travel a lot.
You don’t have to rummage your luggage for your battery pack or sit with 7 Pokémon-go gamers on the floor close to the only socket to charge your dying phone at the airport..

At least they only made it a half hump this time, I was wondering why it looked different.

They shouldve tapered the top hump to make it more seamless still imo but I guess they are rocking the hump, like the notch -- with pride.

El oh el. It's sad that some people will pay the outrageous $129 price for cheaply available silicon when there are far cheaper and better options out there all of which would be unnecessary if Apple wasn't so obsessed with thinness and made bigger iPhones with larger batteries.

What's a comparable battery case you recommend?

Apples retro looks are quaint (despite their futuristic pricing) in the current climate of competition and value from the other mobile companies. And these camel-hump, heavy cases hark back to such styling and that’s wny you have to pay more to get the complete 2010 look. Nice!

That's only $10 more than the Mophie ones that are coming out, and these have wireless charging. Why is $129 so absurd?
Mophie must be on crack too since their packs cost the same. There's always the cheap Chinese crap if you can't afford these, but I'd carry a fire extinguisher just in case.
Who said Mophie wasn't absurdly priced too?

Reputable companies exist for $50 and still make huge profits. The parts are $15-20 of battery of plastic for the case.

Same Chinese batteries, hate to break reality. They are ALL made in China.
