So basically they do it so that they can keep selling ageing outdated notebooks to poor sod Apple aficionados and worshippers at inflated prices. That is mean! Isn't Apple supposed to be "one of the best companies this year"?

It's not outdated until a new one comes out. What do you expect apple to do? Stop sales for 2 months? Lol

It's actually pretty simple. If they tell people that the new MBPs are coming out in two weeks, who in their right mind would buy one of the current models? Announcing the update would cannibalize sales of the current model so what is the incentive for Apple? If someone is desperate for a computer they will buy regardless, but people who can wait for the update would wait the two weeks or whatever. If it's a brand-new product like the ipad, announcing it beforehand makes sense but they are actually smart to keep the release date for the new MBPs a secret. It's certainly frustrating for us as customers but you can't really fault them for it.

The alternative is that they do what Sony does with machines like the Vaio Z--announce them so they're "selling," then just backorder them to hell and back so the Sony forumites still have something to complain about just like the Mac crowd. ;)

No, we expect them to lower prices. Doing nothing just reinforces how greedy they are.

Wow, sorry it wasn't to your liking there... I read it somewhere else and it felt strangely appropriate.

I will seek the approval of anonymous pretentious photographers on the internet before ever posting something like that ever again. Thank you for setting me straight.

haha thanks! You learn fast. I guess it just bugs me when people throw it around like they have an edge. I see it here, i see it on canon forums, just a lot of canon rebel users acting eloquent and throwing out BS like this and complaining about 1d Mark 4 specs when they never can or would buy one. It is hard to respect them when they don't know from their experience with a product or are even photographers who make money for a living. Like the dude who commented on how photographers go to someone to tell them what they need for computing and don't know tech. who can say that unless they are a photographer, then who would say it if they were a photographer. Granted he didn't state all...

Apple spends a massive amount of time on research & development that never stops. All that costs money. They are trying to get a return on their investment.

My dad use to work in retail. One of his famous saying use to be "People will always try to get something for nothing"

I agree.
Why would apple discount when they are making profit? It's like you guys don't understand business or something. Apple has shareholders, they aren't a nonprofit organization!

Well don't count on me paying for old technology at inflated prices - NO WAY HOSAY - they might have lots of shareholders - but their client base might start to shrink soon

I would go as far to say that the QM's are a waste of space. Especially for home /semi-business computing.

They seem to be popular in a lot of the Windows notebooks, my hunch is Intel is wanting to get rid and the Windows boys are picking them up. Then they can brand them i7 powered. They knew they'd made a mistake with the whole quad-core issue.

I will eat my iPhone if Apple choose the QM.

It makes me laugh when people say: "home users don't need to upgrade - Core 2 duo is good enough", etc... They sound like Bill Gates when he said about DOS memory limitation: "640 K is more memory than anyone will ever need".

I just bought an express card with 2 USB 3.0 ports and it's effing brilliant! Soooo much faster than firewire 800 or USB 2, for backups, transferring films or large files! Bring on the new stuff. Apple: wake up!

Except that no one is saying, "A C2D is all anyone will ever need." We're just saying it's more then enough for the average user at this particular point in time.

You know I'm sure you could make the argument that a Core Duo is all anyone will ever need. But, I won't be downgrading to that.

Yeah, it's a clarksdale chip that they've rebranded as mobile. 55Watts TDP, which is only 5 watts less than the Xeon L series server chips i've been buying lately. Crazy for a laptop!

Actually, if you visit Dell's site you will find that the Precision M6500 uses up to the "Intel Core i7-920XM Quad Core Extreme processors" (to quote from Dell) which is the mobile Clarksfield processor not a Clarkdale (the Clarkdale is two core, basically the desktop version of the Arrandale family). They also offer the Core i7-720QM and the Core i7-820QM which are also quad-core Clarksfields.

Furthermore, Dell says that this model can also be equipped with the Core i5-520M, or the Core i5-540M, or the Core i7-620M which are all dual-core Arrandale processors.

Here is the complete processor lineup (under "Processor") direct from Dell's website.

But the Macbook Pros aren't supposed to be aimed at the average user. They are for high-end professionals, hence the "Pro".

Another victim of Apple's marketing.

Pro features: pro videocards, high speed data connections, expansion options, high gamut screens, multiple hard drives...

None of that is on any macbook pro, sans a a single expresscard 34 on the 17".

As of today, there's only one word that can properly describe the macbook linie: rip-off.
