Both the iPhone X and 8 Plus I purchased were unlocked straight from Apple.

What about ones purchased on IUP but not tied to AT&T Next?

I purchased mine outright, haven't popped in a TMO sim to check to see if it's unlocked, but considering buying a second X for my wife and may purchase it on IUP if it is unlocked. If not I will just pay cash.

So yea I think that’s correct but I haven’t tested my phone

Did you get it if IUP? If yes all those are unlocked.
If its for a GSM carrier it will not work with CDMA companies.

    Confirmed testing my 2 phones:

Using TMobile IMEI check here are the results:

iPhone X purchased thru TMobile payment plan - states phone has a balance and is locked
iPhone X purchased a full price directly from Apple - all clear and unlocked

BTW, if you have 2 credit cards, there is a better way to get free financing and unlocked phone. I used my 2% cash back card to buy the full price from Apple. I have another CC that is unused and only charges 2% balance transfer fee with 0% interest so I just did that and now have 18 months to pay off. No need to apply to Apple's IUP program and get another credit check docked to my credit score. Even if I upgrade before payoff, I can easily sell my old phone and use the proceeds to pay off my balance.

When I put mine in the cart for full price purchase it said it was unlocked device on the screen that summarizes your order.

I use the AppleRewards card to do just that. Get the differed 0% financing offer and just pay it off before the 18 months is up. With the points I get my Apple Gift card and that usually is 50-75.00 after a phone purchase, so I am able to get a case and other things like watch bands off the perks.

Take the TMobile SIM out and drop in your SIM and just ignore the message that tells you to call TMobile. That message is basically an ad and not linked to any TMobile account. Even when I put in my TMobile SIM card from my previous phone I got the same message and ignored it. Phone works fine.

Maybe someone asked this already, and I missed it. But, how does one confirm if an Apple iPhone is truly unlocked?
I purchased my iPhone X from Apple directly, for FULL PRICE. Still a little hurt about that, too :(

Go to the website or call the carrier associated with the new phone and check the IMEI number. It should tell you if the IMEI is locked or not. If you purchased a Tmobile phone go here:

    https://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx

If the phone is unlocked it will tell you:

Congratulations! Your device is ready for use. Select one of the SIM cards on the previous page to get started.

Paid in full from Apple says this on their site

    Compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile

This iPhone model will work on both AT&T and T-Mobile wireless networks. It will use either 3G or 4G LTE cellular technology for voice and data services. It can also roam internationally on many GSM carriers around the world.

This iPhone model does not support CDMA cellular technology for voice and data service, such as those used by Sprint and Verizon.

For more details on LTE network support, please visit www.apple.com/iphone/LTE.

...well, my $1400 iPhone X, isn't valid on T-Mobile. But, fine on AT&T (which is who I bought it for)...

If its bought from an Apple store/apple app/apple.com PAY IN FULL it clearly says that its unlocked for certain carriers. Its also $1250ish after taxes in California.....

Odd my IMEI didn't 'work' on the T-Mobile website. Nevertheless, I was merely curious.
In Atlanta, GA, the 256GB model is $1149 + 6% tax + $199 for Apple Care.

Ugh, it hurt even typing that...
