Apple is planning to further expand at its Reno, Nevada data center site, reports the Reno Gazette-Journal, citing a recent permit Apple filed with Washoe County. Apple has requested permission to build a new data center adjacent to its exiting data center.

Over the past several years, Apple has expanded at the site of its original data center several times to add on new buildings, but its most recent permit suggests it is seeking to build a second data center nearby under the codename "Project Huckleberry."

Project Huckleberry's plans call for several new data center clusters and a support building, similar to the current "Project Mills" data center on the site.
"It's a whole different set of buildings but it looks like it is going to be essentially the same design as Project Mills, only turned perpendicularly to the east," said Trevor Lloyd, senior planner for Washoe County Planning and Development's Community Services.
Apple's existing data center on its Reno campus is operational, but still under development. When finished, it is expected to encompass 14 buildings and 412,000 square feet. Apple's second data center will be similar in size, with the site also eventually including an accompanying solar farm.

Now maybe they can give away more than 5 GBs of iCloud

Fun fact: Apple retail employees make more than the sysadmins at the Reno data center.

I was offered a job there and turned it down for the low salary and having to re-negotiate the employment contract every 6 months - 1 year.

The good new is that Russia is re targeting some of its ICBMs away from American cities and aiming them at Apple data centers.
Apple computers saving lives through technology.

But you'd live in Reno! Just think about the perks of that! (pregnant pause)

I do live in Reno, and it's the best place I've ever lived.

Over 250 days of sunshine a year.
Temperature rarely gets over 95 degrees in the middle of the summer.
Lake Tahoe
River rafting
Hiking
Skiing
Low cost of living (for now)
No traffic
Newer 2000 sq ft house for $200K
4 hours from the largest tech companies in the world, who I work with on a daily basis.
Family is all here
Met the love of my life

Yes, sounds like a terrible place to live.

Perhaps this will make the new single-platform (iCloud, iTunes, stores, etc. all on one platform) Apple cloud work properly, or perhaps not...?
...at least not for another few more, long-drawn-out-til-the-end-of-time/never, years!

Sounds like those jobs will be going to India before you can blink.

Additional iCloud storage at no extra cost would be a delight, the current 5GB just doesn't really cut it..

Hopefully this will mean more iCloud storage for the masses.

Hopefully it'll mean more profit for Apple, since Apple probably isn't doing things for altruistic purposes, but one never knows - nothing's completed or described firsthand yet.

I dunno. Sounds like a bit of a gamble.

If things were only done on a gamble, cavemen would have gotten terrified of fire and peed on it as a response to being afraid of it and never bothered to experiment more with it to see what good it can do. The original innovators and they still had the steak and beans and water to exist on while tinkering...

Why not get rid of Retina and go back to 96ppi on a standard tablet/phone screen. ebook and app size would plummet about 30~40% with ease, thus having more storage left. Nobody is forcing people to not buy more storage...

Reno, India?! The center is being built in the US. Now some workers might be H1B, but not all - obviously. A long as Apple doesn't do what Disney, the college in CA, and other companies have done (force workers to train their own H1B replacements because all Americans are dumb and raised in liberal public education centers, you see) then that would make Apple look better. Nothing wrong with H1Bs - ideally the more brainpower is a good thing and I'll spare a long and detail-oriented diatribe about numerous things that make life better for all, but years' worth of Microsoft giving away source code and licenses to China and other countries, H1B abuse, etc, and thankfully some mainstream media sites still discuss those issues because there are multiple sides to this issue.
