Thats not really saying much since citigroup's market cap has fallen like 50% in the past year.

apple i think has had more market value for a while... citibank plunged pretty far, and recovered a little... apple too, but I think C was worse

Apple's market cap took a hammering though too at the beginning of the year though didn't it?

This is good, and another news story you would file under the “I would never have believe this would happen in 1997” category.

It's an amazing turnaround. And, like him or loathe him, a lot of it is down to one person.

the citi almost sank in 1991

Not sure many remember, but Citi has been mired in scandal quite a number of times.. in fact in 1991 it was close to bankruptcy! (i think its stock was in the low single digits!)

and sadly note any similarities to current financial tumult (tho this current wave may snare more folks than usual)

nothing personal, but this is absolute BS. there are a lot of people working at that company and if anybody deserves the lions share of the credit it's the engineers that, um, actually design this stuff. not the marketing jag-offs.

i personally have no feelings one way or the other about el jobso, but i do get tired of him getting all this credit for work that other people have done.

(insert standard boiler plate about "vision" and "leadership" and all that other crap, but what is vision worth without somebody/ies with the skills to actually make this stuff work? not much if you ask me)

anyway, it is good to see a company with lots of talented smart people designing their stuff doing well...:D

substitute CEO/President of USA/Manager-Head Coach/General/Principal/King etc for the Jobster... those on top get most of the credit/blame...

how else to explain the monstrous salaries CEOs rake in, often when their companies do well - and even if they tank.

no argument that Jobs gets a lot of praise, and is seen in current media as a modern giant of industry, breathing up there with ford/vanderbilt/gates etc...
but his top designers are also minor boulders in the tech community system...

as for defending the engineers, I have never heard a marketing guy come to their defense so strong - rather noble ! :)

Yeah and people who actually hammer on the prototypes and test the heck out of final code instead of shovelling it into beta like so many scrambled eggs. Although... testing setups and their management are two of the places that today's beancounters often like to hide their cost cutting. I hope that's not what's been happening with some of the glitchy stuff you hear about now and then with some Apple products over the past couple years. I have not experienced such problems myself, wonder how I'm so lucky, but it does sort of nag at me when I buy the next whatever, especially for gifts. Oh well, that's why I go for the refurbs about half the time!
