I am using since ages an ooold Android 5.0 Smartphone that runs the great Magic Earth navigation software and still gets current map updates regularly.
I thought an iPad has a much better screen and acquired an iPad Air 2, which should be perfect as a navigation device.
I could download Magic Earth, but not the maps, which on iOS require a higher version that the iPad Air 2 can provide.
I got scammed again by Apple's merciless obsolescence.
They have yet perfect devices that just get paperweights, since they block software on it.

So you didn't do your research, and it's Apple's fault? K.

/edit: tbf the minimum iOS requirement for Magic Earth is iOS 15.0 as listed on the App Store, and the iPad Air 2 does run iOS up to 15.8.3, so the app should have worked, but it appears maps functionality may be a limitation by the app developer (and Apple), not Apple alone.

why are you blaming Apple when you seemingly did not check before buying this iPad on compatibility requirements?

You are right: I stupidly expected that a more recent device than my old Android 5 were at least able to run the same stuff.
I should have known better: Don't ever rely on Apple to run anything older than a couple of years.

I just note: even much older and weaker Android devices still run Magic Earth without problems. Not an iPad.
I should have known better. Never ever an iPad !

I'd email the developer and ask what device/iOS version is required for maps functionality. Newer-gen iPads are like, $200 now.

I just love posts like this. Something doesn't work, so let's automatically blame Apple!

Just for giggles... I dusted off my old iPad Air 2 (running iPadOS 15.8.3), installed the Magic Earth app, and was able to download some maps for offline use. It worked fine for me. What exactly is the problem? Have you done any sort of troubleshooting? Are you running the latest version of iPadOS 15?
