I bought a new (open box) Apple Watch 7 Stainless Steel (great deal) watch itself was brand new still in shrink wrap but it came with dead heart rate sensor.
I took it to Apple store and they sent it for repair, today I found out they are sending a new replacement as it can't be repaired.

I'm assuming it will have a brand new serial number? the problme is they only took the watch (without box and packaging) and now the serial number of the new one won't match the one on the box.

this could cause problems in case of resale value later on or to make things more complicated in my case, right after I sent the watch for repair I decided to just return it back to amazon for refund and buy the different color.

can anyone confirm how this works?

You will receive a new serial number which will obviously not match the box. An observant company/person would verify both match. Interpret that however you wish.

I think as long as you have the proof of the reparation, it will not affect the resale value. Obviously the serial number will not match the one on the box, but I wouldn't be worried as long as you have evidence of the replacement and the watch is in good condition.

Also, as someone who sold multiple Apple products to people over the year, I'll say that only a very small proportion of them look at the serial number of the device and the one on the box

Yes I think resale wouldn’t be a problem but returning it back is what concerns me.
I mean the watch was DOA open box anyway and now replaced with a new one but I can see it turn into a problem if they check the serial number once I return it.

I tried to cancel the process couple of hours after I handed it over to genuine bar but they said it’s already sent for service.

Ahh this is something I do not understand. You return a defective product and the manufacturer is returning you a brand new product what is the issue. You got a great deal on an open box item found an issue the manufacturer has your back and gives you a new product for free. I be pleased and happy with this exchange.

I don’t know how the resale market in your area works, but I suspect there should not be too many people asking for original box, as long as the device itself is genuine. Just be open with buyers and don’t bother following Up with them if they ask for a box. I’m puzzled at how this could somehow affect resale value.

You get your device repaired, got A new one and you can continue to use it. I don’t see any issue here.

The issue is right after I sent it for repair I realised I wanted silver color instead of graphite color.
It all happened so fast,it was an impulse buy and they didn’t have silver at that price so I went with graphite.
But now I know I want the silver even though the graphite was 100 cheaper.

I want to return it because I don’t like the graphite color and I want the silver.
now when I return it ,the seller will receive this brand new replacement not the original faulty one they sent me.and I think it could cause problems if they compare serial number of the watch with packaging.

Oh well.
Guess you need to think about either eating your color choice here or try to explain with seller, and the chance he‘s ok with returning like that is, to be honest, unknown. I bet some sellers would just happily accept your return and sell it to someone else who’s ok with receiving a product without Original box.

It wouldn't surprise me if you get the new watch in a box with matching serial number.
If that happens then you shouldn't open it. Negotiate a trade with the store for a different color.
They should be happy to accommodate you.

I don't want this graphite color period.not even if it's half price lol (not that it's bad,but the silver steel looks infinitely better).
I have the box and everything,it's just that the watch body itself is replaced by Apple.so the seller will get the orignal box,but instead of the dead watch,a brand new replacement one.
technically I'm doing them a favour.
but I can see,if their return department checks the serial number, they may think I've done something dishonest etc (which isnt the case at all)
anyway,I'm goimng to return it back to seller once Apple replacement arrives.and see what happens.

I don't think Apple sends them in original packaging.at least with iPhones,in case of warranty replacements they send a identical brand new one but in plain white box.
the online retailer I bought this watch from didn't have the silver.that's why i went with graphite (impulse buy) without actually seeing it in person+ it was a great deal around $100 less vs brand new (it was new but open box),but after seeing it,i still rather pay 100 extra for the silver.the graphite stainless steel looks just like cheap aluminium Appple watch imo.

I just recently sold an an S7 Hermes that was replaced under AppleCare+. Sent the box with the Watch, two different serial numbers. No issues at all. I explained to the buyer about the replacement and forwarded the emails concerned. They got a better watch than if I never damaged and sold my original. New one was sold with 100% battery health and was pristine (only had it for two months. Old one had 95% battery health and some scratches to the SBSS casing.
