1. What's the oldest apple watch that supports heart monitoring?
2. Do the newer models monitor any better?
3. Are batteries replaceable in apple watches?

Considering buying something used/cheap just to be defensive as I get older but don't want to spend a lot.

I'd find a new/used SE or S5.

The SE does not have EKG. The S5 does. The S4 also has EKG but it's obviously older. The SE is sort of a hybrid between the S4 and S5, but you can buy the SE new if you wish for a warranty etc.

Battery is not user replaceable. Apple will do it out or warranty but it's crazy expensive. Google [[your country]] Apple Watch battery replacement and you will find the charges.

I beg to differ, battery replacement is pretty cheap compared to a repair and compared to Garmin's pricing.

Awhat exactly do you mean by “heart monitoring”? Are you concerned about afib? If so I do not believe the SE has ECG capability (I could be wrong).
You also mention about getting “older”, are you concerned about SPO2,

Re: afib: v1 and up all do irregular heart beat monitoring. See attached for SE. I know it was in the 3 as well.

The ECG sensor is a more robust afib method, from my understanding, as it gets recorded and the recording can be analyzed/compared.

  1. Heart monitoring in what sense? Afib, the S4. Regular BPM, all watches support it.
  2. I would say all monitor the same in terms of BPM
  3. Only at Apple stores or certified technicians.

Don't care about BPM. Mostly want a good EKG to watch out for afib/etc.
Not sure if series 6 vs 5 improved on that at all. (I know series 6 got a new optical sensor but that might only be for spO2)

I have the AW5, purchased after my heart attack. I have the cellular version, even though I didn't sign up for a cellular plan. It allows me to call 911 if needed, or it will automatically call 911 and my emergency contacts if I fall and don't respond. It provides my wife some peace of mind when I walk on the trails near our home. So if you are interested in that safety feature, consider buying a cellular model, not just the GPS version.

I'm considering cellular for my next watch for the same reason. It's an excellent feature.
