Looking at getting a word processor and was either going to get appleworks or MS office (student edition).
    Which one is better?.

depends on what you are going to use it for. AppleWorks is pretty simple, but easy to use. there are also compatibility issues if you plan on sharing docs with PC users. The translation isn't always perfect. On the other hand, Office might be too much overkill for you. But it is the program that most people use, though that is no particularly great reason to buy something:) It is also about to be updated. It just depends on what you want to use it for.

I would say that Office makes the most sense for the long term. There is a new version, but I don't think that student version allows for a free upgrade.

There is a learning curve to Office, but when you have to work on a PC you will have the skills. And as mentioned if you need to send files to others then office is the better way.

well ifuv worked with office already on a pc, the mac version will not be much different, its not as fast, but its still a pretty good suite.

apple works is pretty dated and you might run into some compatibility issues like the previous poster mentioned, not to mention it doesnt have some features that ms office has.

but ms office is supposedly being updated, so you might wanna wait for that, as for apple works i dont know when the next big revision is

I'd vote for MS Office. No compatibility issues, and it's feature-rich. In my experience, no other office suite comes close.

I must point out that TextEdit is a very good word processor and it's part of OS X so you don't have to pay extra for it. People overlook TextEdit too often.

If you need more features or you need a complete office suite, then it's AppleWorks or Office.

The 2 strikes against AppleWorks are the interface and compatibility. It's easy to use and has good features, but it looks old. That's completely superficial and has nothing to do with the way it works, but we've gotten so spoiled with the iApps that AppleWorks looks out of place and it turns some people off. Compatibility is a bigger, and more real, problem. If you have to share documents with people using Office you'll lose some formatting in word processor documents and spreadsheets are a disaster. If you're just making things to live on your own computer, then AppleWorks is great.

MS Office--The question, imo, is how much do you hate Microsoft? They dominate the office suite genre and really have us by the balls. The software has the typical bloat, but it works so it's just an ethical decision. I'm a huge MS hater but I still, unfortunately, use Office. I need to share documents with the rest of the world too much.

I use OpenOffice on Linux and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. The Windows version is great too. Unfortunately the Mac version isn't quite there yet. Maybe soon...
