An interesting article from Madrid Spain on how large cities are protecting their urban areas from large dangerous wild animals.

Madrid is facing a big infestation of dangerous boars and are using bow hunters to combat it. Environmentalists are now claiming that the boars are suffering when the hunter gets a bad shot and they want to eliminate the bow hunting.

Do you think the hunters should switch to guns or what other methods should be used to control these dangerous wild animals near urban areas ?

Shot placement is key regardless of what hunting implement is used.

I can see that but it would seem to me that a gun has a much better chance of targeting a killing shot.

Personally, an RPG is far more ethical than guns or bows.

Agreed but it would seem to me that a gun would require much less skill to do a killing shot.

Are you planning on volunteering your services to Madrid :).

Bows are just as accurate as guns. Guns provide range(distance) remember they are talking about Urban areas, how safe is it going to be using guns in that sort of setting? Bows are good for 75-100 yards, which I wouldn't feel comfortable personally going past the 75 yard mark. This hunting season I shot two deer with a 45-70. I hit the first one through the shoulder and into the heart, it was dead before it hit the ground. Second one I hit between the shoulder and spine, it fell when I hit it, and once again trying to go up a hill, before turning around and running away. I spent 2 hours that day and another 3 the next looking for it.

By ethical, I assume you don't mean giving a bow or gun to the wild animal being hunted to even the odds. If so it doesn't which is used: the gun is going to put the animal down quicker, but the bow gives a larger chance for the animal to escape.

If pure ethics are the only consideration, and nothing else, then I think somehow making the city environment unfriendly to boars, while creating a designated boar preserve conservation area outside the city is the most ethical thing. Then moving the boars there.

However, ethics is rarely the only consideration. Cost, logistics, and efficiency are often also considerations. In that case, I think a good rifle in the hands of an experienced hunter is the most ethical way to go.

People have been hunting (and surviving) with bows for a lot longer than with guns.

It's all about skill and placement.

Boars are destroyers of the environment if left unchecked. They are robust, breed rapidily, deplete resources, kill other species.

I can kill with just a steely stare. That's how a REAL man does it, by pure force of will.

Assuming that there is no alternative to eliminating these animals, the best solution is the most efficient one.

    Guns over bows.

We should bread super large eagles to attack the predatory boars.

Forget about the stare of a real man. What about the stone cold, "you're going to get it when we get home", stare of a mother! 'Twill make children and grown men cry just the same!

Cry on the inside maybe, lest you let a tear slip and she tells you that she'll give you something to cry about.

And if said very calmly and quietly - even worse. Yelling/emotion was to be expected. But when it was a quiet "We will talk about this later" you knew you were f'd
