argument with buddies

so here is the deal. my friends dad works for intel and his family are real pc buffs. but my friend knows s*** about computers, so he keeps telling me that pc's are better than macs cause they are faster (typical pc user). and anything i tell him he is like AHHH shut up pcs are better. and so i was wondering if anybody who has got some extra time on their hands would mind giving me some reasons i can feed him to shut him up?

YOU RUN WINDOWS I DON'T

No need for anything else.

Just don't get in an argument and start saying loads of BS about pipeline stages and how much more efficient a G4 is than a Pentium 4, the G4 is clearly thrashed by any of the most recent Athlon and Northwood P4 systems because the G4 is still stuck with bandwidth restrictions the PC hasn't had to deal with since the Pentium 3, even when dual cpus are a huge benefit.

You can point out that the PPC970 is almost certainly coming this year and ask him how long it's going to be before intel have a 64bit desktop chip.

Or just say those 5 words and keep telling him to shut up or change the subject to something really politically charged that you know you can distract him with.

i support a business w/ a PC network and have noticed that while the new PCs are pretty snappy, the older ones degrade w/ a suprisingly steep curve.

my three year old mac feels pretty fast to me, but they have two year old PCs (and newer) that are _painful_ to use.

sometimes they get so bad i have to wipe the HD. there was one that took 10 minutes to launch IE. yeah, that felt slow.

you may want to ask your friend how often he has to buy a new PC to keep it feeling fast. i feel macs stay useful a lot longer -- i'm running a web and ftp server on a machine i bought in '97.

Ask your friend to download Adaware, and run it, and see how much spyware he finds. While running it on customers computers, my record is 145 different spyware programs. Also, ask him whether he uses kazaa or Kazaa lite, if he says 'kazaa' than laugh at him and point, then proceed to pretend to look up his personal information online.

You could also ask him when the last time he got a virus was.

Ask him why he has a floppy drive still?

Pretend you can read his mind, and determine that his computer is either made of black plastic, or beige plastic.

Thats about all I can think about for now.

I got a mac too and love it still(G4 at 400 mhz),but my girlfriend recently bought a pc with a duron at 1.4 ghz running windows 98 se(she needs it for internet and word),which seems blazingly fast to me.This machine is very responsive in every way.But still,I know my next machine is a dual mac(hopefully with a ppc 970).

alrgiht thanks guys. i have told him a bit of what you have suggested but i am thinking this is good. he is dumb enought ot the point where this will confuse him and he will be like fine whatever macs are better. which wil be satisfying. thanks guys

i wonder if yr friend got his arguments from here

stick with the OS for now. if/when the 970 comes out, you should be able to argue speed.
give rendevous (sp?) props for easy networking
give airport props for 54mps wireless/802.11b integration
give firewire props for being faster/more reliable than USB 1.1/2
give powerbooks their due (DVD burner, 5 hour battery, 15.2" screen, 5 lbs.)
give iLife props for bringing digital media to the masses
give Final Cut Pro/DVD studio pro props for being at the top of their field.
praise OSX for reliability, ease of use, beauty, etc.

always remember:
apple doesn't manufacture the cache, RAM, processors, hard drives, etc. comparing a mac to a pc isn't the right way to go. go with what the company does. apple makes wonderful periph tech (see above), terrific software, and a drop-dead wonderful OS. they got stuck in a relationship with a bad developer (motorola), and if they should go with a certain chip later this year, indications are that benchmarks would be a wash.
