This is a followup to a Post about New York, etc.....
This is interesting because where I live in the Houston area, it doesn't seem to have increased.
You know, just maybe, these 850mhz upgrades just might have something to do with holding back MMS on the iPhones?????
This was an email just received:

Now if I can get the same type of email for New Orleans everything can be fine...

I really hope 850mhz has nothing to do with MMS. I cannot see how it would, apart from some AT&T bureaucrat's schedule. It's not a technical requirement AFAIK.
Out in the hinterlands, we'll see 850mhz when Beelzebub begins issuing mukluks.

Well, I believe that I read that the reason they were holding back on MMS until the end of the summer, was because their networks were pretty well taxed and would not handle well, the additional traffic with the addition of MMS. AT&T must have been working hard to convert over this many towers in major metropolitan areas. Only they know how taxed their networks have actually been, and what effect MMS would have on them. If this is the case, maybe AT&T deserves a little bit of a break from the bashing they have been taking over this. With 850 mhz being able to handle more traffic, this all kind of lines up.

I find it ironic that they're doing that down in Houston while up in DFW (where AT&T is based), the network is so slow and riddled with dropped call issues.

Oh, MMS will be a torrential flood, when it comes. True that.

The only way I can see 850 alleviating the strain is it it's in addition to the current 1900, as opposed to instead-of. Even then, 850 just gives better penetration of buildings/trees/distance, it doesn't mean better bandwidth.. I think. So, we might be able to "talk to the tower" better, but their backbone network will still suffer the same strain.

If I'm off base with that, someone please enlighten me.

My understanding is that it's both - they are changing over some 1900 towers, but they are also adding a massive amount of NEW 850 bandwidth.

I don't think the email here is directly linked to MMS, but I do think they're related. Basically, we'll see MMS when the network can handle the additional traffic, and this is one small part of that.

Personally and selfishly, I don't want MMS. I will never use it, and it will further cripple the already paltry 3G speeds I usually see. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't think AT&T should hold it back to make me happy, but I'm not really looking forward to the day it launches.

Why do they deserve a break? They are a company that provides a service. When said service is sub par the company deserves every bit of flack that comes their way. They had every opportunity to update their towers at any time... If you want to be the best you simply be the best and stop providing excuses as to why you're not. I'm not talking about MMS for iPhone even though they knew it was coming and didn't do enough to prepare ahead of time; I'm talking about simply dropping the ball and letter their users down in many areas. They deserve every bit of fire and brimstone lobbed their way.

The preponderance of evidence is with you and your point. It would appear the 850 is at least part of their plan to avoid a "monument to the south-end of a north-going feline" (cat-a$$-Trophy) situation.

MMS may not be predicated on getting 850, but it appears to help.

Will it allow AT&T to not freeze solid on the 25th? Time till tell...
