Acarney that is the same message that I got. Doesn't really make any sense to me so I just resubmitted my request.
That generally means that the IMEI does not match the phone number you entered on the web site based on AT&T's records.

If you meet all the other eligible checks concerning contract / device, just call Customer care and have them update the device IMEI registered for that phone number to match your IMEI.

That's kinda what I was wondering.... Any location on my web account that I can check the IMEI? I'm still in contract so I figure customer care might now be able to do anything... Can I go to an AT&T store and verify my IMEI is correct in their system? I've kinda got a friend that is a manager at one, he wouldn't break rules to unlock it but I know he would take some extra time to verify account info is correct for me...

So verified with AT&T that my IMEI is correct.... Noticed that you must also NOT have a bill due or past due so I went ahead and paid my bill (even though the due date is over a week away) and am trying again. Also found out that my ETF is $215.... That's a little too high to recover that cost by selling an unlocked phone on ebay or something I think :-/

Yes they can verify your IMEI at the store using OPUS but why not just call Customer care at 611 and verify that you have your IMEI correctly registered on your line. There is no cost.

However, you also indicated the next problem. You are currently still "in contract" so you don't meet terms for the unlock request at this time.

Not at all. You'll easily get that and probably more. Did you keep the box and have the cables and all?

An unlocked phone is worth quite a bit more on the open market.Something to consider.
It took 4 days for a response from Sep 8-I don't qualify because I'm still under contract but I knew that-was hoping for a miracle!

I don't travel abroad so I really had no need to call in and request mine to be unlocked. I plan on giving my iphone4 to my son and let him use it on straighttalk instead of the phone he has now but since I can just do it online to unlock I'll do it just because.

thanks for the heads up

Do you really think just unlocking will add ~$200 value to it? I don't mean being able to sell it for like $300 total or something. I'm already expecting $300 to $400 and what I mean is I doubt if I pay the ETF & unlock that I'll be able to get $600 or more selling price now. :-/

Edit: yep, box and all original stuff besides earbuds, white AT&T 64gig 4S.

Dave, yes I know I don't meet the requirements. I just want to verify that it's the contract that's holding me back and not ATT's horribly worded email about not being able to find a device on the account, etc. I've verified the device & made sure the bill is paid, if I get denied I'll known I didn't luck out like some others did that were still in contract.

Just submitted my request but I'm not sure if it will get approved. Here's some background info. in regards to my situation. I purchased a 16GB 4s from Craigslist back in April of this year to upgrade from my 4 which I sold. My original contract was through my 4 so how AT&T will handle this?

Ah, thought you meant getting $215 total. However, 64GB unlocked 4S are going at high as $600 on eBay. So if you unlock it, have everything original, it's in very good shape, take good pictures, and make a solid post you can get $600 or very close. I'll be putting mine up on CL for $600 unlocked.

I've purchased an iphone from ebay and had them unlock it a long time ago.. I'm hoping they can do this again for me. It say's to fax a receipt, but I dont have that so i guess i'll call them tomorrow.

Same here.I will have to wait until my 19 month contract anniversary when am eligible for for a upgrade and do it then.

What Dave said regarding the IMEI has no bearing on the negative response from AT&T.Neither you or I are eligible because we are under contract. The IMEI has nothing to do with it.

Explain this unlock... Does it hold up between iOS upgrades? Is it any hacking on your end or just wait for the heads up and then restore from iTunes? If its not kosher to post a link here can you direct message me? ^_^

Hey yeah it was recommended to me by another user of these forums. Just do an advanced search, choose "By Seller ID" and search the ID "unlock_fusion". They were extremely fast... After you do buy-it-now, they e-mail you the link to a site where you login and input your IMEI.

They guarantee the unlock within 48 hrs, but I received notification that my unlocks went through 2 hrs later. I bought Qty: 2 of their unlocks because I was doing my phone and my wife's, and it gave me 2 "credits" when I logged into their site so I was able to input 2 different IMEIs.

Once you receive notification that the unlock is complete, you just backup your phone in iTunes (connect via USB and backup to the computer), then click "Restore" (not Restore from Backup, just plain Restore). After it wipes your phone and reboots, you'll see the "Congratulations your iPhone has been Unlocked" screen in iTunes and then you can restore the backup.

From the research I did, the unlock is permanent no matter how many times you wipe, restore, upgrade, jailbreak, etc., and unlock_fusion offers a "lifetime guarantee" on their unlock. I have no idea how they accomplish it - my guess is that they pay off some low-level AT&T employee to toss IMEI's into their white list. I suppose it's possible that someone could discover their scheme and then un-whitelist those phones, but I expect that it's very, very unlikely.

What is the procedure to complete this?

I was thinking of doing it now as I'll probably try to sell my iPhone 4 after I receive the iPhone 5 at some point. But the ATT site refers to an Apple site page which mentions stuff about changing sim cards, backing up, restoring, and such as part of the unlocking process.

Is that all part of it? Does it require a backup, clearing and restore of the phone or does it just "happen"?

Tried the unlock form for a 4S I purchased off craigslist a few months ago to try and increase resale value and no luck. Called ATT customer care and explained I was going to upgrade to the 5 and if they could unlock my 4S. All I needed to do was give him the IMEI and that was it. Restored the phone to factory settings, plugged it into iTunes, ejected and reconnected and saw that my iPhone has been unlocked, then restored from iCloud.

Guys, if you've unlocked your phone through them how long did it take? I'm hearing 1-2 weeks is it really that long?

Does anyone know if the SIM card in the phone you are unlocking needs to be active? I requested an unlock from AT&T on 9/13/2012 for my iPhone 4 and have not heard anything back from them yet. I am upgrading to the iPhone 5, which is arriving on Friday 9/21. If I activate the iPhone 5 my iPhone 4 will be deactivated. Does this affect my ability to unlock my iPhone 4?

i submitted my request on Sunday (9/16) and haven't heard back yet aside from the initial request confirmation email. i'll post here as soon as i get the unlock. i have been off contract since late June of this year so there shouldn't be any problem with my status.

Just got my unlock e-mail from AT&T (took 5 business days). It says to wait 24 hrs from receiving the email before attempting the unlock. Guess I will unlock it just prior to activating my iPhone 5!

Does anybody know if once its unlocked, it remains that way forever? Will iTunes always repeat after a restore that your phone has been unlocked?

Is there anyway to verify without using somebody elses sim on a different carrier?

well, i got my unlock email from AT&T last night. so six days from the orig request. i'm attempting to erase all content from the phone and unlock while still keeping iOS 5.1.
if this doesn't work, i guess it isn't a big deal to do the instructed restore + update through iTunes, but i'd rather sell the iPhone with 5.1 incase the buyer wants to jailbreak or doesn't like the new maps or whatever. but, if this doesn't work, they'll just get 6.
