    Delays increase terrorism fears

By Charles M. Sennott, Globe Staff *|* June 1, 2004

ATHENS -- With the Summer Games set to begin in less than 11 weeks, missed construction deadlines at the Athens stadium site are compromising a highly sophisticated $1.2 billion security effort to prevent a terror attack on the 2004 Olympics, according to security analysts and several officials directly involved in the preparations.

Construction delays fuel fears of security vulnerability, say these security sources, in two potential ways: The first is infiltration. Work crews of many nationalities are flooding in and out of the sprawling construction site where the massive Olympic stadiums and other venues are undergoing hasty efforts to complete them on time.

The appearance of chaos and the crews working through the night have raised the specter of a terrorist posing as a laborer, conceivably embedding an explosive device with a timer inside the site. Last month there were long gaps in the chain-link fence separating the new stadium from a public road on the edge of Athens.

The other concern is lack of time. The delays in construction have narrowed the window for counterterrorism specialists to "lock down and clean" the sites prior to the Olympics.

OK I'll lay my chauvinist $.02 here, just look at the dark haired bimbo in charge of the project, and tell me she's really interested in getting things done as opposed to buying that new pair of shoes with the diamond inlays.....

My personal thoughts when I heard Greece was going to host these games many years ago was just wait and see. I didn't think it was going to go easily, even before the "terrorist danger". The Onassis estate is the only thing that could pull this off now, OH wait she's just a pampered princess worth billions of dollars
Interesting though her mother died in '88 so who are the "parents" mentioned here?

Anyway.... On with the games.... NOT!

It would be very sad if the games were cancelled. The significance is that this is where the original games started. This could end up setting new standards for host countries. There have been questions about their worthiness from the beginning.

I was in Athens in February on vacation and there was construction everywhere. It was obvious that they were way behind schedule, and all the locals knew it. At the time I remember thinking that I didn't know how they would finish in time, and I still don't know how they will. As far as security goes, I can see why people would be concerned. As nice as it is for Greece to host the Olympics again after all these years, they simply are not equipped to handle them. Obviously, there is no way they would cancel or relocate the Games at this point, but I do think that the state of affairs in Greece is an embarrassment. When Greece made the commitment to host the games they needed to take construction and security more seriously, and construction needed to be started far earlier, or be done at a faster pace. I can only hope that everything works out OK in the end.

I also agree with wdlove, that what is now happening in Greece will hopefully be taken into account when choosing future hosts for the Olympic Games. I recognize the value of holding the games all over the world, and in as many countries as possible, but some countries are simply not equipped to handle the responsibility of hosting an event of this magnitude.
