I have a workflow that works properly in Automator, but won't work when saved as an application and attached to a folder as a folder action.

1. new file arrives in folder with IMG_ in the filename
2. ask user for a new base filename (keep the same extension)
3. rename the file
4. move the file to a different folder.

I am using the Canon EOS Utility to snap pictures in tethered mode. The EOS Utility will put the image file in a folder within seconds, but it has a generic sequential filename. The folder action should ask the user for a new filename that matches the object I am shooting. It doesn't work as a folder action, but it does work running in Automator.

I have to shoot 20,000 objects, and I need a process that is more efficient than dumping a camera-full of images and renaming them. I need to name the file with the object's ID as I am pulling the object out of the collection to image it.

I am testing this with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi. The Mac Image Capture routine will not capture images from that model in tethered mode, hence, I have to use the EOS Utility. I would use another camera that IS compatible with Image Capture if I new which ones were.

Testing with late-model iMac running Leopard.

Grateful for any suggestions or references I can use to make this work.
