I wish there were totals instead of just a "solution." When I was done I had a massive surplus (by my quick and dirty calculation). (oops, there are). I had $713B and $1917B.

    I solved the deficit!

I just slashed the heck out of the military, increased taxes and raised medicare and social security to 68.

    No problem.

The sad part is, behind each of those proposals/solutions, there is a constituency/PAC/union rallying against the cut. What we need is legislators with vertebrae.

If only it were really this easy to do...

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of how many people who did the exercise chose which categories. Such as 22% opted to raise Social Security age, 6% opted for the national sales tax, etc.

I tried it again with all of the right-wing republican approved suggestions...

Oops, that didn't work. I checked every box to cut domestic and foreign aid. I cut military aid and compensation (I figured GWB cut all sorts of veterans programs). I enacted tort reform. I tightened eligibility for disability and enacted different cost of living increases. In a nod to bi-partisanship, I clicked on the Lincoln-Kyl proposal. NOTHING ELSE. 6% savings from tax increases. 94% from budget cuts. $220B of 418B needed to close the 2015 Budget shortfall. $349B of $1,345B of 2030 Budget shortfall.

(If you were really aggressive - http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/11/13/weekinreview/deficits-graphic.html?choices=zzxrh5qz)

I took pleasure in reducing the number of government contractors.

Raising the retirement age: maybe ok for someone who's worked in an office all their life, but not for manual and many service workers.
