Get Handbrake and use the presets they have for whatever device you want to watch it on. Once you rip and encode you can use MetaX to tag the video file correctly so it shows up nice and neat in iTunes.
 
Seems you can get by exclusively with HandBrake (and VLC). Fairmount and DVD2oneX are nice but not really necessary. Sorry to clutter this forum and thanks for your time.
 
yeah that first response was a bit ****. it would have taken less time just to answer.

i agree that handbrake is the best to use, i am not sure why they have changed it and made it so that you use .m4v. but the version i have lets me do high res ipod .mp4 which i just prefer
