This reality show truly is groundbreaking. It follows 16 year old high school student Ben, who's father is transgender and becoming a woman. In a crazy twist, Ben's girlfriend's father is also in the process of transitioning, but not nearly as far along as Ben's father. These two teenagers are helping each other navigate through their parents changes and the cameras capture every raw emotional moment, not sugarcoating anything. The show premiered last night, and I'm hooked.

It's amazing how far we've come as a society that this topic is no longer swept under the rug and that people no longer have to be silent.

Another reality show I'll never watch. My streak is longer than Joe DiMaggio's.

they are all "scripted", something is wrong in your head if you want to televise your family to such degrees IMHO. yeah I feel the same about the Duggars.

I actually enjoy reality tv. I don't think there's anything wrong with making the choice to televise your family. You do it for your financial future if you play your cards right. I would do it.

Would it be better for you if they called it a "documentary"? Because that really all that reality tv is, social documentaries. And it's fascinating.

Lets try to not focus on the reality show aspect and try to focus at the actual issue the show focuses on, as that's really what the thread is about.

The point is, there isn't a reality show that has presented its material/family without all the bull **** and exploitation that comes with a reality show today.

"too much" by what standard? It's what the people want. I honestly prefer reality tv over regular scripted television. (yes, I know reality tv isn't always 100% real)

I get that. I know how reality tv is filmed. My point is, Ben's father didn't choose to change his gender for a reality show. Ben emailed ABC and pitched his family for a show as a way to help him cope. Are some scenes staged by the producers? Of course! But the emotions and reactions are raw and real.

    By mine.

If ABC Family wants to run the show, fine by me but that doesn't mean I have to watch it or have any interest in it.

So then why did you reply to this thread? Just for the sake of derailing it and inserting a generic comment about how you're so above reality tv? This wasn't supposed to be a debate on reality tv itself but on the actual topic of the show.

I posted because I agreed with Happybunny, and others who have posted here. If you don't like it, that is your problem, not mine.

Again, thanks for staying on topic and not derailing my thread. Pointing your finger and saying "well they did it too" doesn't change the fact.

Are you implying that this family isn't really going through what they're going through or that they just set this transgender scenario up for the show years ago? That's even funnier.

im implying that the "raw emotions" may not be as "real" as you think they are.

you gonna cry? wait for the camera man, he's on break.

Probably the only thing we'll agree on, @iBlazed. I'm a reality show junkie myself. Not so much this and I probably won't watch it being I didn't even know ABC Family is a channel. Loving The Island right now.

For a scripted version, there's Transparent on Amazon TV. It stars Jeffrey Tambor saying a lot more than "Hey, Now!" on Larry Sanders. Jeffrey plays Maura Pfefferman, if you know what I mean.
