I got this for Xmas and thought I should play with it; a Belkin F5L009 type USB hub that has a network port for fun with USB sharing and Harddrive stuff. The box never said it was supported by MAC osx but the CD it came with installed a utility just fine and i have plugged the Belkin router into a 802.11n/b/g router with no problems. I have a 2.5in Mini usb drive that already had time machine on it.
After pluging in the USB drive to the Belkin hub and then attaching the HUB to the ethernet port 1 OSX launched the Belkin Utility and asked if i wanted to allow the computer to access the drive(Instruciton manual says only one machine may mount a drive at a time as it is not truelly a NETWORK shard drive). TImemachine is backing up now at 80211n speeds. Cool huh?
But was there a manual option for the drive to turn off after so many minutes of Idleness? The OSX system profiler says the drive is present and mounted but SMART is not available. I don't wanna mount and dismount this drive every time I use it...
Anyway, the Belkin model listed above get's a thumbs up i'll tell you how things go from here. Most data transfers are registering with iStats at 800kbs+ maxing out at 1.5mpbs. Not lightening fast...but fast enough to run TimeMachine backups every 24 hours over night for me.
