While it seems reports that Best Buy was holding iPad 2 stock were true, it was apparently not due to a contract dispute with Apple. Best Buy released this statement to BGR:"Best Buy continues to receive iPad 2 inventory from Apple on a regular basis. As we've said previously, we are fulfilling customer reservations first. Our stores have been asked to temporarily hold non-reserved iPad 2 inventory for an upcoming promotion. This is a customary practice for us when there are supply constraints. Best Buy enjoys a great partnership with Apple, and we're delighted by customer response to iPad 2."The above screenshot does show that Best Buy asked employees to hold sales of the iPad 2 at this time, but no other details are provided. A CrunchGear reader even received an email reply from Apple acting-CEO Tim Cook who denied any knowledge of any issue.

ok, now i can go back to best buy. they aren't evil anymore and the sales people are the most knowledgeable i've seen

Best Buy does this all the time. I purchased a Samsung TV off their Web site for in-store sameday pickup last year, and took my receipt to my local store. They wouldn't give me the TV I already purchased because they were holding all of that model until Sunday because of their Sunday ad flyer. They had at least 10 of that model in stock on their store shelves.

They told me I could come back Sunday to pick it up. Naturally, I refused (this was like Tuesday), called Best Buy Online and had them refund my purchase. Then, purchased from Amazon.

I'll never purchase anything major from them again.

Internal memo (TOP SECRET ENCRYPT) Best Buy corporate

begin: [We've settled on a story that we were saving them for a promotion. That will be our main line as of now. We'll flesh out the details tonight. No one goes home until we work this. Opinions welcome] end

Why would you run a promotion on something that sells out the moment they come into inventory? Sales are for Android products that can't be moved any other way.

Perhaps it is something like, "Purchase an Android device and we will let you buy an iPad."

Best Buy knows who D:apple:ddy is... They know who's keeping that company afloat and relevant in todays chaotic economy.

They wouldn't do anything to jeopardize a business relationship they NEED.

Again they know who D:apple:ddy is.

Yeah because before Apple came to Best Buy, Best Buy was in a lot of trouble.

Give me a break dude.

Oh crap. 400 fear-mongering posts in the other thread were for naught.

LOL!

Come on people, think next time. Like Apple gives a rat's ass how their retailers horde iPads when Apple themselves can't even supply them.

It's still pretty ******.

If I walk into a Best Buy and to buy a product that's for sale, knowing full well they have it in stock but they just want to "hold it" for something, I'd be pissed.

This is standard practice by their SOP (Standard operating platform) according to company policy. I know, because I used to work at Best Buy. Trust me, there are a lot of other shady things that happen when they say they "hold" for the Sunday ad. Things such as holding the product for friends and family and using the EPPI application. Although, the iPad is already at Cost, so there is really no discount on the product but rather for the accessories.

Just buy online and not through Best Buy. I refuse to buy anything from Best Buy because of their ethics and practices.

what is slightly evil is

By telling their employees to say "that there is no inventory available for sale." they aren't actually lying. But really, they are.

My guess is there is very little margin for them with the iPad 2 so they are using it as bait to bring lots of customers in when they run their promotion in the hopes that while they are there in the store looking to by an iPad 2 (which will sell out quickly) they'll buy something else that is cheaply made with a higher profit margin for BB. Likely a Xoom, Acer Tablet, or an HP laptop. ;)

Apple should dump BB base on their "search" practice alone. If you go to BB and search for iPad, BB doesn't show iPad. It shows the options to select iPad or many other tablets. If you search "Sony LCD", you will get "Sony LCD' and not other brands.

I walked into Best Buy to buy a PS3 with Metal Gear Solid a few years ago when that was the "bundle of the month". The guy said he had one but couldn't sell it without a PSP.

He hadn't even finished his sentence that I was sitting in my car driving away.

No need to get emotional, they don't want my money, they don't get it. I bought it at Toys R' Us instead. I still shop at Best Buy to this day if they have what I want and will sell it to me. If they don't, no harm done, I walk away.

Yeah, how evil of them! Showing a page where you can either get the "iPad! The one and only! or some of these other tablet thingies no one cares about". I actually thought the opposite, that page was a major case of "sucking up to Apple".

I thought Best Buy was a place where you can try out devices so that you can later purchase them online for a lower price. They sell stuff there?

Why would they need to have a promotion for the hottest selling device in the world?:rolleyes:

You guys don't get it do you, the promotion is not for the iPad, they are going to use some stock of the iPad to promote some other stuff and make money. The iPad is the draw in this case, not the promotion in and of itself.

Yeah, that makes a little more sense. But what....iPad2 accessories?

I still have a hard time buying their reason.
