Someone recently gave me an EVO 850 with an internal SATA attachment. I want to use it as an external storage on my new 27 inch imac (when it arrives) while maintaining the maximum speed. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
And I apologize for misspelling "enclosure". I guess there is no way of editing thread titles?

Any USB 3 SATA dock/enclosure would do. You won't ever saturate the full SATA SSD speeds externally due to a wealth of variables but to be honest you're unlikely to notice a real-world difference. That said, you won't hit the full SATA speeds even when running internally either.

The performance benefit of SSDs predominantly come from the negligible access times rather than the read/write speeds so don't lose any sleep over paper specifications!

A SATA enclosure will cost you peanuts. :)

Thanks for the advice! I see a few on Amazon that are very cheap. Is there any brand you've used that you prefer? I guess for $10 to $20 or less I can't go too wrong if they don't work well.

No worries! I normally stick with StarTech for this sort of stuff but the reviews are pretty poor for their offering; therefore I'd avoid them on this occasion.

Either of these two have wonderful reviews so I'd go for one of the two:

If its a 2017 iMac with USB-c ports, I'd recommend that you look for a USB3.1 "Gen 2" enclosure.

These are touted to yield transfers at up to 10gbps. This is probably faster than what the drive itself can deliver, but if you use one of these enclosures, you'll probably get speeds a bit faster than from a USB3 (previous generation) device...
