I figure with arm Macs around the corner, this has to be either the very best time to buy or the very worst time to buy. What do you think?

It’s a terrible time to buy. When the new machines are announced they’ll either be better, in which case you bought too soon, or worse, in which case you can still buy today’s machine, and cheaper.

In my opinion, not a good time to buy. I intend to keep my 2017 27" iMac until such a time that Rosetta 2 is discontinued. By that time, ARM machines will be improved.

I wouldn't buy an ARM Mac on release, I'll would leave it for a couple of years until software is mostly fully supported & the hardware will also be better, quicker & more power efficient by then as well.

IF i needed a Mac of any kind now i would still get the Intel version keep it for 2 to 3 years then trade it in for an ARM based Mac when the time is right to do so.

If you need x86 compatibility is an excellent time to buy. You’ll have one of last models that support Intel code.

I would expand on this and say to wait until Apple replaces the intel version of the device you want with an Apple Silicon version. This way you know you’ll get the latest intel version you could’ve bought.
