I've done JB before with my old iPhone 3G, but now I'm on 3gs with OS 3.0.1 with Carrier file hacked for tethering. I like how things work now, but I want to install MyWi for the upcoming iPad. What's the best app to JB with a Mac? I don't plan to install anything else so those fun wallpaper features are not important to me.

    - Which JB app is most stable?

    - Which JB app is easiest?

easiest imo would be blackra1n, but you will likely have a tethered jailbreak since you have a 3Gs....

I personally think that pwnagetool works really well. You can do a basic setup, which is only slightly more difficult than using blackra1n, but you won't have to have a tethered jailbreak. Or, you can do an advanced install and create a restoration .ipsw that already has cydia sources and packages in it, change boot logos, unlock, mess with the baseband, etc. Really gives you a lot of options and as long as your are semi computer savvy I would imagine you could figure out how to use pwnage tool!

    my .02

-edit- and you could upgrade to 3.1.2 if you wanted when you jb and use pdanet for tethering, or just use mywi all the time instead... costs $10 though in case you weren't aware.

I've used RedSnow before and it was pretty easy, but my iPhone 3G did get stuck a few times when the battery was low and needed a hard reset. It was annoying. I need it to be stable because I use my iPhone till it dies.

well then i would use pwnage tool... they have a quick option that makes it pretty simple. You just need to d/l the original .ipsw file and then pwnage tool will locate it and pretty much does the rest for you.

blackra1n could potentially leave you with a tethered jb, which sucks balls if your phone ever dies because you have to get back home to your computer to fix it. Couldn't even imagine if this happened whilst on vacation or somewhere you wouldn't be able to get back to your computer for a few days lol.

and afaik redsn0w is used to unlock phones, not jb....?

-edit- nope guess redsn0w jb's and unlocks lol. found this on their site too... may help you know if you can just use blackra1n or redsn0w instead....

...and blackra1n is not responsible for the jb being tethered, you will have the same problem jailbreaking the new bootrom with any program .

but he is on 3.0.1 to tether, if he is jbing then he will be able to tether with 3.1.2 so he can upgrade and use blackra1n if he wishes.

idk what you are saying here? I have a 3gs untethered jailbreak via pwnage tool....

Does Blackra!n turn on Apple USB & Bluetooth tethering? I am using that right now with the Carrier hack.

no, you can download several different apps which allow you to tether once jailbroken. I have used pdanet which works well, you can usb and bluetooth and adhoc connect your devices. Also if you had mywi you would just always have a wifi hotspot so i don't really see your need to be able to tether when you could just open up mywi

on the newer 3Gs iPhones apple included a different bootrom. hackers have, as of yet, not released a tool that can jailbreak these devices AND have them boot up by themselves.
It sounds like you have the previous version.
Updating your firmware does not change your bootrom

OP: are you saying you want to update your phone to 3.1.2 and jailbreak, or are you saying you want to stay on 3.0.1 and jailbreak?

If you like things the way they are now, you can easily jailbreak your iPhone on 3.0.1 using redsn0w 0.8 (not the latest 0.9 beta, which is for 3.1.2). This will not affect your carrier hack at all, and you will still be able to install MiWi.

If you wish to upgrade, you should definitely use PwnageTool to create a custom firmware with which to jailbreak. This will allow you to maintain your current baseband and allow you to use the ultrasn0w unlock instead of blacksn0w, which causes a significant minority of users problems with WiFi. Even if you don't think you will ever need to unlock yourself, a phone with the old baseband is more valuable for resale.

Please note that if you do choose to upgrade to 3.1.2 you will have to take additional steps to reenable the tethering hack. Since you intend to install MiWi, however, there's not much to worry about; MiWi takes care of re-enabling the tethering hack for you.

It is not blackra1n, but the version of the bootrom on an iPhone which determines whether a phone will have a tethered jailbreak. Using blackra1n on a phone with the older 359.3 bootrom will not cause it to have a tethered jailbreak, nor will using any other tool on a phone with the newer 359.3.2 bootrom cause it to have an untethered one.

But this is a moot point for the OP. Since he clearly states that he has firmware 3.0.1 on his phone and no phones that are subject to a tethered jailbreak ever shipped with that version of the firmware, the OP is guaranteed to have an untethered jailbreak.
