Best way to upgrade 1,1 to SSD and Clovertown CPU?

I just ordered and received a new SATA 3 SSD and some X5355 CPUs, but I'm not sure what to do now.

Installing El Capitan on the machine was extremely hard and took a long time (because it's so old), but it works just perfect now. I really want to keep all my stuff as it is now, but upgrade to Clovertown CPUs and an SSD upgrade as well. Here's an issue: My SSD is only 60GB (I just need it for OS X basically), but I have maybe 200GB on my HDD at the moment. So my questions are:

    1. How can I upgrade to an SSD, while only keeping the applications and basically ignoring the files on my desktop, which are maybe around 200GB?
    2. How can I, after SSD, upgrade to Clovertown, without everything screwing up? Followup:
    3. Should I upgrade to an SSD THEN do the BIOS mod or whatever to make the CPUs available or?
Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm not sure what I should do first, without reinstalling OS X. Thanks!

Before I upgraded my 1,1 to 2 x5365s last year I had already installed El Capitan on this machine (went back to Mavericks at some point but that's irrelevant). You don't need to do anything in particular on the OS side before the upgrade, just follow the instructions to swap your CPUs, reset your SMC, reboot, upgrade your firmware, and voilà. :)

As for your HD/SSD transfer, I would simply try Carbon Copy Cloner - thus ensuring every critical file is copied. Just make sure you select "clone: some files" and not "all files" in the source section, that gives you the option to select which files are copied (you could for example leave out your home folder to save space...)

Oh cool! So you would suggest I install the new Clovertown CPUs first, then proceed with the SSD installation?
Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy OS X over completely? Make the drive bootable, basically.

Yep, if your current drive is running El Capitan in your 1,1, then Carbon Copy Cloner will do a perfect copy of your system files and you'll be able to boot on the SSD right away. I've done it countless times since the Mavericks days on my own 1,1(2,1)

And yes, upgrade your CPUs first, and then as the icing on the cake, install the SSD ;) ...the SSD will truly feel like a huge speed boost!

Good luck with your upgrade! Don't rush it, be patient and....apply thermal paste carefully! :)

Oh yeah definitely. I do my research first (for weeks haha). I've built PCs for years and always apply thermal paste perfectly haha.
