Basically, I went and got my 3g yesterday and now I want to prepare my 1st gen for sale.

my 1g was never unlocked. it was a regular ole 8gb 1st gen on AT&T.

I'd like to securely erase all of my data in the simplest way possible (hopefully without having to jailbreak)

I'd also like to leave the new buyer with a nice fresh copy of the proper 2.0 software. (yeah, I'm one of the too anxious ones that put the 1,2 version of the 2.0 software on my phone before the real release)

I still have the old SIM card in the 1st gen phone... My new 3g phone has is own SIM.

I'm afraid that if I just do a restore through iTunes (with the 1,1 cross-grade method) and set up the phone as a "new iPhone" my data won't truly be erased and besides I obviously don't want to really re-activate it.

    Anyone have any insight?

I apologize for my naivete if I'm overlooking something very simple :)

    thanks scaredpoet.

after i update my de-activated phone with the official 2.0 software will i be able to avoid the whole "re-activate" process that itunes tries to shuffle the user through after the update? i'm afraid of being stuck on some sort of "please activate your iphone" screen ya know?

    You'll be hosed!

I just did exactly as described and got the reactivate screen. So I've just hosed myself. Although I was stupid enough to remove and destroy the old SIM card as I understand that it has personally identifiable information on it. Now I'm stuck having to reactivate when all I wanted was an iPod Touch equivalent for my son.

    WOW!!!! good to know!!!!

however, if i'm just going to sell it i suppose it doesn't matter if i hose myself :)

but it IS important to me that i get rid of data first.. it looks like i can delete all data using the method described above since i have the 1,2 2.0 software on the device. (under settings-->general-->reset)

do people generally sell iphones with the old SIM in it? or without the SIM?

if i'm asking questions that can be answered elsewhere i apologize and would appreciate being redirected to a more appropriate source.
