I was wanting to install macOS 10.13 on an external drive and dual boot between the beta and 10.12.

My concern is that 10.13 might install some beta firmware on my machine.... AKA even though I have the beta on a completely separate drive from my production SSD, beta firmware is still being installed on my device. Does this happen at all?

Or is beta firmware only required if I enable APFS? (In that case, I'm fine with using HFS+)

    Thank you

Yes, the 10.13 installers update firmware on many, if not all, Macs except (for now) for the Mac Pro 5,1.

Okay, in that case, can I run Xcode 8 and Xcode 9 beta on the same OS image? (Not at the same time)

Edit: Apple documentation states it can co-exist. Guess that's the route I'm going to go until 10.13 is released this fall. Thanks!
