In a newly unearthed video from 2006, Joseph R. Biden Jr. said he supported Roe v. Wade but did not view abortion as “a choice and a right” — remarks that raise further questions about how he views abortion rights as he runs for the Democratic presidential nomination and faces pressure over his position on the issue.

“I do not view abortion as a choice and a right. I think it’s always a tragedy,” Mr. Biden said in a videotaped interview with Texas Monthly, resurfaced on Thursday by CNN. “I think it should be rare and safe,” he added. “I think we should be focusing on how to limit the number of abortions.”

So in order to get the Democratic nomination Biden will have to disavow previously held positions that are probably held by the majority of the country. There is no way he gets the nomination unless he says he is for abortion on demand up until birth. That’s where the base of the Democratic Party is right now.

In the current environment that exist on the left you either move further that way or yuur outta here! The further left the better the chance it appears..

I don't think Biden will last long. He is not left enough...

Why in the hell does anyone have to be for abortion in order to be accepted in the Democratic Party? Who is brainwashing these voters???

Biden has always been pretty close to the median Democrat.

This is the same year Trump said the economy does better under democrats and two years earlier Hillary was going on TV opposing gay marriage. Disavowing previously held positions is basically a job requirements for these politicians ;)

That was 13 years ago. The world has grown since then.

You're completely wrong with the "Majority of the country are anti choice" and "democrats want abortion on demand up until birth" statements. Those are nothing but right wing fake news.

The people that would actually demand that can properly be counted on 2 hands....

Just like claiming that candidate XX would have to support shooting immigrants at sight in order to win the GOP nomination.

It is true that the anti-abortion crowd think their viewpoint is far more popular than it is, but perhaps that is because this varies so much by region or perhaps they limit who they talk to.

In any case, Biden strikes me as reptilian and unprincipled.

Actually I think that may keep him around a bit. While the rest of the field is racing to be the most progressive, Biden will quietly collect the votes of the normal, non-crazy Dems. Then there will be a repeat of 2016 where the Progressives who don't get their way, take their votes and stay home.

There, fixed it for you. If you are going to accuse the right of things, please get it correct.

It's a purity test for the democratic party. You better be for killing babies (DO NOT SEPARATE THEM FROM THEIR PARENTS AT THE BORDER THOUGH) and against anything stemming the tide of illegal immigration. Check your privilege at the door if you're white as well.

If you're a republican I have no idea what the litmus test is ever since they embraced Trump. The Evangelical wing use to be it, but now they have to go sit in a corner after they supported a guy on his 3rd wife who bangs porn stars while she's pregnant.

That's actually pretty recent, considering how many older things are dug out all the time and made a deal over.

It was around the same time as Trump's Access Hollywood hidden recording occurred.

Having said that, and adding that Biden seems like an awful politician and the kind of creep we're always hearing about, I think the only thing that should matter is what his plans are in terms of legislation. I don't really care what someone personally believes, but what they will try to do in office.
