Hahah if that’s a spec bump I will just get a refurbished Mac and sell it when the 16 inch gets released next year. The bigger display is coming just can’t reallly confirm when

The problem with current Macbook models, of all varieties, is that there is a built in AppleCare cost that must be mandatorily factored in. I always thought the cost of AppleCare was too steep, but now with the issues it really isn't a choice, so take the discounted computer and add $380. :(

True. And it would be at least 6 months released before I thought about buying it. I refuse to pay full price for these machines, especially when it’s not mandatory for any work that I do. I’ll enjoy reading reviews and feedback from everyone else in the meantime.

I think I will end up being one of the review u are going to read :)

[doublepost=1555730668][/doublepost]Why’d you choose to double the ssd rather than doubling the ram?
I did that---for me, I was more concerned about running out of storage than hitting a RAM limit. My work is really limited to Office and productivity apps.

Every once and awhile I do wonder if I should have just sucked it up and grabbed 16 GB...

I recall the "RAM wars" of years past and I always put myself in the camp of "4 is probably fine, 8 is more than enough and anything more is overkill." I have 24 GB on my iMac and I'm sure it's excessive.

Costco regularly does these types of sales, and they give you a square trade 2yr warranty too.

I bought mine from them and got a top spec (base specs only, no add onslike you can get from Apple (Vega etc)) 15” for $2300

When has Costco had a current model 15" for <$1600?

I just don't see how anyone with any workload, even office productivity, is getting by in Mojave with 8GB. I am a "power" productivity user. I'm generally not editing video, I'm running mail, iTunes, safari + chrome (maybe 1 or 2 tabs each), large PDFs, and somewhat large Word files. The below is an extremely light workload for me and I'm well over 8GB of memory. Now I'm not sure why MacOS is using so much of it, but I always felt handicapped by the 8GB on my 12" Macbook.

They re-engineered RAM usage back in Mavericks I think to take advantage of all the RAM, so if you have it, you'll use it. It used to be that RAM went unused. That's not how it is now--my 24 GB iMac is ALWAYS using more than 8 with a relatively light workload. My Pro is always using close to 8.

Someone else can explain this better than me, I'm sure.

Different retailer, but still a BIG sale on refurb 13" and 15" Touch Bar MBP models, i.e. https://www.microcenter.com/product...uter-apple-certified-refurbished---space-gray

$1599 for base 2018 15" for Apple-refurb seems like the lowest ever offered? Plus you should be able to add AppleCare+
I live in Dallas and took advantage of Micro Center's recent refurb sale. Got a 13" 2018 MBP with Touch Bar for $1199--refurbed by Apple! Looks brand new and includes a one-year apple warranty. If you live in the Dallas area, get over to MC asap. These are some of the best prices around right now.

You sign up for MyBestBuy and there’s a student verification thing. The way Best Buy handles education discounts though isn’t store wide. They just run promotions that usually result in a steeper discount on already on sale items.
ok thanks. I saw a few mention a $100 student discount coupon, wasn't sure if that's something different or not.

Is the Touch Bar really worth it in your opinion.. or is it gimmicky?

I think you have to consider now that almost all apps are programmed to take advantage of the RAM available, meaning they will take as hard as possible to keep everything in memory so that you can recover it instantly when you need, which is why some app feels snap to use.

This kind of strategy is not only take by apps, but also the OS itself, including macOS/Windows (not sure about Unix/Linux). So the OS itself would take much more space compared with a machine of 8GB RAM, while the performance gain certainly does not scale up with the RAM difference. For most everyday apps, I would say minimal. Of course there are some RAM-hungry for which more RAM does make a difference.

Touchbar is a gimmick. Do not buy it for the touchbar. I only got the touchbar because I wanted the quad core cpu. And only the touchbar models have the 4 cores.
