My new (lightly-used) Accent got hit with its first bird poop today. I washed it off with water, but I have no idea how long it might have been there, and I think I left a little permanent dull spot. Hyundai's clear coat/paint is supposedly, shall we say, not all that thick , so I'm worried about using any kind of polish on it. Maybe just wash and wax the car thoroughly?

Also, has anybody tried a product I saw online called Poop-Off for Cars?

Simple dishwashing soap like Sunlight works. You got to do it quick after the accident or the acids in the poop will eat the finish. Always a good idea to keep your car waxed to prevent these sort of atrocious incidents.

If you are really worried about it get some:

3M Imperial Hand Glaze, 3M Finish Restorer and some P21S Carnauba Wax.

If you don't want to spend that kind of money on the wax get some Zymöl Cleaner Wax or Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax. The 3M stuff is a must to get rid of the dull spot and then a good coat of wax to seal the paint again. Your car should get at-least twice a year a fresh coat of wax.

Hyundai's clearcoat does suck. I have a 2004 Tiburon and bird **** will eat right through it. How old is your car though? I think the paint warranty is 3 years and it should be covered. Next time Im at the dealer for some reason I'm going to have them take a look

^^That's what I do.

I knew bird poop wasn't good for your car, but I never knew bird poop did THAT much damage.

It's crazy isn't it? Bird poop combined with baking sun light or sprinkler water combined with sun light are some of the worst enemies for your cars paint finish. (In the summer season that is.) Don't even get me started on the winter season.

I'm currently watching the o.c. with my GF. They just had some guy keying a kids Range Rover. I feel quite bad for the range rover, so sad.

Oh I love The O.C.!

Once I was pooped on by a seagul at Lake Michigan when I was 10. Random kids came up and laughed at me becuaes the saw me running around in the water screaming... semi-embarising.

Nothing better then spending hours detailing a black Infinity (not mine a customers) to have it diarrhea'ed on by a flock of geese when I went inside to fill my water bottle.

I wanted to buy a shotgun that day!

The only good thing about it was the fact that I still had to do the final rinse to get rid of all the static caused by the buffer.

The paint is water-based on cars these days, bird poop and dead birds on the car cannot be good to the finish.

Alexstein had spot-on advice. 3M Imperial Glaze (or a lighter polish - P21S is also good) followed by waxing.

If you use Sunlight or any other type of dishwashing detergent, you need to wax again - it'll eat the wax right off.

Lastly, be careful how you wash bird droppings off - they often contain bits of rock, etc...which can do even more damage to your paint.

And...if you're really retentive ;), you can carry something like Perrier or any other type of naturally carbonated water. You can use this water to help rinse-off droppings if you're not near a hose, etc. Take-off the top, put your thumb over the opening, shake and aim...

Lastly, don't park anywhere near trees...not only bird droppings, but aphid droppings, etc. Seriously; aphid droppings can do just as much damage.

In the summer when the birds are eating the local berries, I get purple bird poop on my car. That is a bitch to get off.

Wow, you had to have been ticked off.

Perhaps dynamite would have worked better- just put it in/under the tree where the birds are nesting. ;)
