I know the iPhone 8 has Bluetooth 5 and from what I've read it's supposed to have almost 4x the range of previous versions.

I'm curious...

I sometimes listen to music on a Bluetooth speaker in our backyard. With my iPhone 6 the music would start to cut out if I got more than 15 feet from the speaker. Will this be much improved simply because my iPhone 8 has Bluetooth 5? Or to get the benefits do I also need a speaker that supports Bluetooth 5?

Hopefully that make sense!

ETA: Just found this on Google, sounds like I may need to buy a new speaker to get the improved range...

Your old devices probably won’t benefit
While your existing phones, speakers and equipment may work with Bluetooth 5 devices, they almost certainly won’t benefit from its extra capabilities. That means you’ll need to buy all-new Bluetooth 5-ready gear to take advantage of its entire expanded feature set.

Yeah I expect next year headsets and speakers using the Bluetooth 5 protocol will start being sold. I was kind of hoping Apple would have come out with BT5 AirPods but it looks like wireless charging is the next AirPod upgrade. Maybe next year. I can’t wait!
