I DO NOT recommend ANYONE covert their external drives to APFS! I did this and the boot time for my 2017 iMac went from about 18 seconds to 1 minute and 45 seconds when the APFS converted external hard drives are hooked up. And they have nothing on them other than data, no OS. NOT COOL! I don't understand why there is absolutely no info out there about this. Does anyone have any idea what this is all about? Bear in mind that all I did was convert my external HDs to APFS. I am not booting from them at all. They only contain files.

I assume these ARE ssd drives?
Only reason I ask, is external ssd’s are quite expensive.

VP of Software Engineering for OWC Holdings Inc.........he suggests that you never (not yet, anyway) upgrade a mechanical hard drive to APSF for, among other reasons, it is actually far slower than a regular HFS+ volume.

Backup your data to another drive then erase and reformat HFS+ Mac OS Extended Journaled.

I’d like to punch the person that wrote that article lol ;)

Did you read the comments? They are all blasting him for his recommendation to format HHD drives.

I wish I had read the comments first :/

I’m working on reverting all my external drives back as we speak. I won’t be doing that again!
