I just got back from the Apple Store and opened the box to the new G5 2.0 Ghz, and found that instead of a computer we got 2 bags of topsoil, the keyboard, mouse and all manuals were stolen as well. Going back to the store, right now. Will keep you updated as to the situation. Must be fingerprints on those bags from those who did it. Damn them.

Reminds me of the guy that exchanged a computer showing that the internals had been replaced by potatoes. After the third computer he brought back filled with potatoes the employees wised up and realized he was stealing the internals and replacing them with potatoes. Police got involved after that.

DAMN. Something similar happen to me once regarding a telephone answering machine. Instead of the machine there was a clear container of liquid that you put in lunch boxes. My dad had a heck of a time convincing the manager that we didn't try to scam them. I wish you luck and hope you get a computer this time  ;)

What a complete bummer...

I can't imagine that's going to be an easy thing to prove.

Somebody turning up at the Apple Store with an empty box and some dirt...

'Look -- see, no computer!'

Best of luck there.

That's what I thought of here...this sounds a little fishy to me.

The seal on the box had to be broken when he bought it - that would make me open it in the store, especially if I had spent that much money on the thing.

Anyway - you have any pics of these bags of top soil?

I imagine you're in for a tough time on the return - if its true good luck...

Probably happened at the Apple Store or the shipping company.

There are quite a few employee thefts like this that happen at the store, since the shipping thieves usually steal the entire package.

The only reason I'm taking it well is because getting angry about it doesn't help.

Ok, on way back. It looks like they're calling their loss prevention people and checking everything. They did replace it, with a new one, and it is in there. More later

I know you can't take pictures in the car, which is why I couldn't understand how you were on the way to the Apple store while still posting here.

I was mighty curious about that as well....

Glad you got a new one, though.

i was almost positive this was an ebay scam from the title...for it to happen at an actual apple store (not an authorized dealer?) is mind boggling. that must be one stupid apple employee...or a very lucky one if they just drop the case.

A similar thing happened to me once long ago - I bought a Polaroid camera and some film at a K-Mart. I got home opened the camera and the box was filled with a rock. I then noticed that the film box looked like it had been glued shut. When I opened it the film was all shot and the insert was filled with newspaper. I went back to the store and the manager asked "why are you trying to return used film - then I showed him the rock in the box - prompt refund.

Sorry to hear about what happened with you - I'm glad the Apple Store made it right.

Sounds like either Pipain is blowing smoke up are @$$, or he's a crook trying to get another new iMac.

1. No pictures, not buying his story about not being able to get pics. If I saw something like that, I'd take pics first and forget posting on this site as soon as I saw it. Taking pics would kinda cover your arse a little.

2. Either he lives right next to an Apple Store or is technologically equipped to post via the internet in the car.

3. How the hell could someone get out of the store with a computer? And I don't think Apple would of accepted the box if it had been torn open.

I'm not buying the story here...just someone trying to get a little attention!!!!
