The article says that the 11 year old has been charged with first degree murder. His father, who owned the gun, should also be charged with murder.

This is a tragic, but absolutely preventable crime. At some point, we have to start holding the adult gun owners responsible when kids kill with their guns. I live in Texas and it seems like we hear about something like this at least once a week.

You might've had a point if you didn't just link to a news site that did just that.

To be fair, you linked a news site, and they are very obviously reporting those shootings...

Nobody reports on them with the exception of your link to the media that reports on them.

I'm not exactly sure how an 11 year old can be charged with first degree murder, but I do think the parent should be considered an accessory to manslaughter.

He left a loaded gun easily accessible to a child. That deserves something.

I'm referring more to headlines that don't make the national news. You won't see this type of stuff on ABC, NBC, or Fox during prime time news.

I think it's that stories like that have become so common, we don't have a need to pour over them anymore. They happen, we know they happen, it's just another day.

But children killing children? That's still a relatively rare thing.

It's not difficult to keep your firearms locked up and out of the hands of children. Any adult who feels that "teaching responsible gun ownership" is enough, should be fined or jailed now - before something happens.

I'm reminded of the time I was babysitting, about 25 years ago. We heard a noise outside, and the 12 year old I was caring for ran upstairs to get her father's gun. I was horrified.

I don't care that much as MOST of the time it is just one thug taking out another rival thug over the color of their shirt or what street/hood their are on. have at it just learn to shoot properly so you don't end up killing kids.

Plenty of kids know how to drive. It doesn't mean they should do it without adult supervision.

That's why I said just learning responsible ownership isn't adequate.

Agreed. There should be harsh penalties and gun confiscations for parents that leave their guns unsecured and accessible to children.

Unfortunately it is still a persuasive thing. Common sense just isn't that common. Jkcerda openly leaves shotguns and ammunition accessible to his children which explains his defence of the act.

It is irresponsible to leave guns accessible to children. You have openly claimed to leave your guns and ammunition accessible to children well under 10 years old. It beggars belief that you think this at all a sensible thing to do.

I was unprepared completely. I had never seen a gun up close at that point and was not qualified to supervise a child with a gun.

So your children are always under supervision. Are they allowed access to your guns if you and your wife are both absent?
