This is sick. It's not about laws or lack thereof. It is about blatant stupidity of the deputy. This is a guy who should be trained and I am short on understanding why the gun was loaded.

It's sad really. I have a pistol myself, so does my father. The weapons are kept unloaded, never played with, and certainly not left within reach of a child. It's just commons sense.

Sadly, as my father used to say, "Common sense isn't too common any more."

Or why he had to show it off.

Or why they let the kid even get close to the gun.

    Etc.

    Etc.

Exactly. A family picnic hardly seems the place to show off your service weapon. Although I am assuming it was one of the guns in his arsenal. The 4 year old seems as though he could have easily walked in and grabbed it if the adults weren't looking. That door should have been shut and locked if there was some dying need to actually show off your guns. Again, why loaded? I also think the deputy is FOS in saying he had just only put it down.

Sometimes people get too comfortable or lazy and forget the importance of safety.

Although it's a tragic event, the 4-year old must have been mentally ill. I mean after all, only mentally ill people kill people with guns, right?

history shows is it never has been.

    ----------

Since the first this year there have been many kids killed by stupid people playing or cleaning or just handing their guns. they leave them loaded leave one in the chamber they shoot their children. Guns tend to make stupid lethal.

Clearly, and for that matter, its too bad she didn't have a gun on her, then she would still be alive since the gun would have saved her.

So, the deputy is going to be charged for his incompetence, right?

If it is an accident all is forgiven.

Nope in this case it was incompetent adults. You do believe in such a thing right? Do you think we can regulate incompetency? How do you propose doing that?

Make sure they don't have access to things that are sharp or go 'bang', so they can't hurt themselves.

But I thought all firearm related deaths were caused by mentally ill people? That's what Fox News tells me.

you made a big point about accidents vs homicides with cars (pretty much how accidents shouldn't count in death counts) and now you are making the point you argued against in that thread

    entertaining really

A similar incident occurred recently in Oklahoma in which a 3 year old fatally shot himself after finding his uncle's (a Highway Patrol officer) loaded gun.

A couple of moments confusion talking to a work colleague today about this
since he had seen a different story about a 4 year shooting a 6 year old with a rifle yesterday.

While i'm in total agreement with your first sentence, I will take issue with the second sentence. It would be, IMO, nearly impossible for a 4 year old to kill an adult with a hammer, or even a knife. Not strong enough.
