I’ve noticed since installing iOS 18 that some frequent podcasts weren’t appearing in my “Up Next” or “Latest Episodes” lists.

Switching off the default option to “Hide Played Episodes” revealed that they were in my list but had been marked as ”Played” even though I hadn’t listened to them.

It can’t be the app automatically playing another podcast after the last one finished (and me not noticing) as earlier today one downloaded while I was listening to another podcast and the newly-downloaded one was marked as “Played”!

Shame the app doesn’t feature a ”Play History” feature which may help explain what’s going on…

Yes, I've noticed this too. I initially thought I must have hit Play and another podcast has played silently but it's happened too often now for it to be chance. What's annoying too is that because I have it set up to sync podcasts across devices it could be an issue in iOS, tvOS, macOS...

I'm still seeing this - it seems to be that when a podcast is finished, the phone will 'suggest' another podcast to listen to, and at the point of doing so, it gets marked as Played, even if you don't hit Play.

I am not seeing this bug. However, I do notice that when I play an episode partially, and then play another episode, partially played episode disappears from the list as having been played.

This has now been flagged in Feedback as a fix in a future iOS version. I'm not doing the 18.1 betas so not sure if it's in there, but good to know Apple recognise it as a bug.
