Buying the iphone 5 with a single line plan and not upgrade eligible-will this work?

I currently have an iphone 4. I am not eligible for an upgrade until 1/23/13. So I am wondering if the following idea makes sense to attempt. Basically tomorrow I want to pay the ETF on my current conract, port my number over to a prepaid "burner" phone, preorder the 16gb Iphone 5 (with a new number) then port my original nmber back to the iphone 5. Will this work?

    I figure

350 ETF-150 (# of months on contract)=$200 for the ETF

    +200 16gb iphone 5
-200 (roughly what I can get for my iphone 4)

In the end I would pay pretty much $200

Does this make sense? I have seen others who plan on adding a line but I don't have a shared plan, just a single line and so my bill would go up like $40/mo by adding a line. This would then seem to be the most economical way if it is feasible.

    Thanks

If this is not doable I guess my only other option would be to buy the full retail 16gb iphone 5 (probably $650) and then sell my iphone 4 on ebay/craigslist? At best I'm thinking I might get $300 (if I jailbreak it and then unlock it) so then I would be paying roughly $350 for it.

If only people put this much effort into something more useful or practical in their lives. But nooooo, we have to do all this finagling and calculating and squirming to get a stupid phone.
