I'm wondering what would happen if I saw this happen? I dont think I would get out to help when some dude is holding a 15 cm knife going crazy. I would help if it's some kid getting his ass kicked by some guy or a women getting beaten up.

What would you do? Would you help? I would probably call 911.

Nope. The OP is posting a Social question.

You have to remember heehee, these things happen very fast.

I could have helped, had I been there, but only because the crow-bar I carry beside my driver's seat is longer than a 15cm knife.

Otherwise, there is really no safe way to approach the situation for the average passer-bye that has just his hands and feet.

Given the opportunity, I might mount the kerb and drive my car into both of them. Better to have your leg broken than be stabbed to death.

But then you'd be sued by both of them.

I'd write a best-seller about it to recoup the cost. :)

You've thought this all out, haven't you.

Who will play you in the film?

I'm auditioning the hopefuls this afternoon. Personally, I favour Cate Blanchett.

depends all on the situation, i would certainly call the police and try and apprehend the suspect if i believed my own life wouldn't be in danger as a result. i've chased thieves before, but thats a different situation.

A guy in a psychotic state, with a lethal weapon? Sorry - I'm staying WELL away. No point adding to the body count.

It looks like I'm not as selfish as I thought. I just couldn't agree with what the reporter and the 67 year old man said.

God, Mother Nature, or whatever, gives you fear for a reason.

And the 3,000+ pound weapon is an excellent idea. At least you'd get the perps attention. ;)

I read somewhere (I think it might have been in 'Tipping Point'?) about a woman who got stabbed to death and nobody helped her because the large number of witnesses were all waiting for/expecting somebody else to help. Could it be that the same phenomena occurred here?

As for me, I've waded into fights to break them up and I'd like to think that I'd do the same in this situation.

yes that is known as the "bystander syndrome"
    Story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_Genovese

its commonly talked about in psych and sociology studies. things also are a bit different now with the prevalence or information and ability to connect to authorities (cell phones etc).

Fortunately, Texas law is quite specific about the validity of using one's handgun in defense of a third party. The obvious caveat is that you determine who, indeed, is the Bad Guy. "Reasonable and prudent" and common-sense and all that, because it WILL go to a grand jury.

But no Kitty Genoveses around me, thank you. Self-respect and all that.

It doesn't sound like an innocent person getting attacked out of the blue, it sounds like two thugs settling a score. I don't think there's any obligation to step in the middle of that. If someone was drowning of course I would save them, but this is different.

That's what I thought when I read it as well. If it weren't that way, or it were a woman / child - I'd like to think I'd be able to help. But if it were just 2 thugs... I say let them settle it themselves.
