Certainly, a new Apple Cinema Display is long overdue... but as to whether or not it comes soon remains to be seen. Since Apple has been pushing 4K and 5K displays in the iMac line for a couple of years now, and most of the newer hardware can drive one (more or less), I agree that it's a reasonable expectation.

When the DP1.4 officially exist on a Mac, then release a 5K Cinema display should not be a problem.

However, at this moment, I doubt will Apple release a monitor that with eGPU. Of course, that GPU only has to drive the pixels, but no need to do any 3D work (I mean on Apple's point of view), that should be very easy to achieve, and no one can blame it's performance (as long as it can drive the 5K Cinema display at 60Hz).

5k Monitor with built in GPU. Called it. I'm not crazy.
Had the same thought. Not about specs but just a new display. I have been watching the Apple refurb store for a display. Bought one a few months ago and need another one. They usually popped up every fews days. For the last few weeks nothing. And last week Apple dropped the price in the Canadian store by $50. Got me wondering if Apple was trying to move out the new stock.
