I am just finally getting around to upgrade my parents iMac with Catalina, the only thing I am concerned about is that they are using my old ATV 3's for home sharing via iTunes.

I noticed catalina has a new apple TV video program, which seems to move the video library out of iTunes.

Is it it safe to upgrade without loosing their video library?

Is it safe to have the new video program to move the media files?

Since ATV 3's can use Plex, Im stuck with home sharing for them. They won't be upgrading their ATV3's until I get rid of my ATV 4's which doesn't seem very likely right now :)

I wouldn't, as upgrading to Catalina may also force them to upgrade their 32-bit apps, among a host of other issues.

Is there a reason they need to be on Catalina?

They use only basic apple apps for internet stuff like browsing. The 32 bit program limitation isn't an issue.

I just wanted confirmation on how upgrading to Catalina might effect ATV 3's home sharing?

I can confirm, I have updated everything to Catalina a while ago, and use Home Sharing with multiple AppleTVs.

Yes; because all my macs are on Catalina and I have not had any huge problems. Its easier to manage a bunch of macs all on the same platform than it is to have legacy equipment running hold out software when I don't need to. They don't run 32 bit programs and I would rather have them stay current once the OSX version is stable.
