My 2013 27" IMAC "powerhouse" has expired and became just a beautiful and useless dust collector, but with 16GB RAM waiting to be used.
To replace it, I bought a refurbished 27" Imac 2019, but with only 8GB RAM 2667 MHz DDR4.

Question:
can I transfer my ram from the older 2013 IMAC to the newer one from 2019?
Can-or should I mix the obviously 2 different generations of RAM even if the sockets allow it to be mounted?

AS always, all comments are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

from OWC's website, it looks like the 2013 uses DDR3, while the 2019 uses DDR4
they won't work

I think the 2019 Mac has 4 slots, you should replace in pairs, I guessing that model has 2x4GB sticks, might have 1x8.
memory work best when it's all the same, so adding 2x8 to it might work, but replacing it all with 2x16 would be better.

On OWC, you can get 2 x 8GB sticks (16 total) for $40, or 2 x 16GB (32 total) for $72
(Verify this is for your Mac model, if not use their memory chooser to find the right one)

Thanks for the answer WAW74.

Let's forget about trying to reuse old hardware/RAM from Imac 2013.

So, currently I have only 2 x 4GB sticks of 2667 MHz DDR4 in my replacement Imac 2019,
but maybe I can add another pair of 32GB RAM?

I can add two sticks of: 2 x 16GB PC21300 DDR4 2666MH as sold by for $71.99?

This would give me 40GB total RAM, but I would be using 2 different pairs Ram Chip sizes: 2x4GB and 2x16GB.
I doubt that there could be a conflict, but want to doublecheck.

Any thoughts? And Thanks.

This will work fine. I have about 25 iMacs in this configuration at work.

Double check that it is 2019 iMac (for which mixed pairs is fine) and not 2020 iMac which is very picky about non-identical RAM modules.

I initially ran my 2019 iMac with 2x4 (from Apple) and 2x16 (OWC). Just make sure they are in alternate slots (4-16-4-16 or 16-4-16-4)

I have 2019 and 2020 iMacs at work. All of them are working fine at 40GB. (2x4+2x16).
