I'm in the military and moving to Japan in a couple of months. Does anyone know if I can use my unlocked AT&T iPhone in Japan with AU KDDI? I don't want to use softbank because I hear that their service is not as good. I also don't want to buy an new iPhone 4S, when the iPhone 5 is probably going to be coming out very soon. Will AU let me just get a sim card on contract with them? I'd be grateful for any info that I can get. THANKS!!!

    No you can't.

AU uses CDMA (No Sim Card), the same technology that Sprint and Verizon uses.

AT&T uses GSM (Sim Card), so you'll have to go with NTT Docomo or Softbank.

I recommend NTT Docomo. They are the AT&T of Japan and have good coverage throughout Japan (City and Suburban)

Not true, AU uses CDMA+GSM they have SIM cards but you must buy their phones. I have an AU iPhone with AU and the service is amazing. I also have a sim in my old iPhone 4S with them. My suggestion get the iphone5 I've been getting 16mbps download speed on their new LTE service on camp foster.
