Novice question, but can't locate an answer elsewhere...

I selected a movie I planned to watch, rented it on Apple TV, and the download is complete. Now the hubbie and I are going out of town (bus trip) and I'd like to take the rented movie with me on my iPod Touch to watch on the long bus ride. I thought all I'd have to do is sync Apple TV and iTunes and the rented movie would appear on my computer, then I could sync it onto my iPod Touch so I could easily take it with me.

Am I mistaken? I know stuff I download on ITunes will sync to Apple TV, but doesn't it also work in the reverse? Or is the problem that it's a rented movie I'd like to transfer to a different device?

    Feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

Until your question, I thought it was possible... Then I went looking to provide a link in answer to your question.

The answer is no... If you scroll down to the additional information section near the bottom of the page it says:

After you rent an HD movie on your ATV, you will get a message telling you as much. Something else however, that isn't always clear, is that you also cannot watch your rented movie on another ATV (say, if you have two or more ATVs in your house). Lesson is, make sure you rent it where you want to watch it.

Although I've never done it, though, I thought you could rent it on your computer through iTunes and then transfer it to the iPod or watch it on Apple TV. Is that correct? If so, seems a little silly you can't take it the other way.

You can do that (I do it all the time). It seems Apple doesn't want it to work the other way 'round.

Thanks everyone! What about purchased movie?

Appreciate the feedback, everyone! I hate to spin my wheels trying to do something when in actuality "you can't get there from here". It's helpful to have this information confirmed.

Based on what you all said, I'm suspecting that if I rented another movie, downloaded it to iTunes on my computer, I'd could only watch it on that computer. (I could not sync it to my iPod, either.)

Now. If I purchased a movie and downloaded it to iTunes, I am thinking I should be able to sync it to my iPod? (Assuming there's space.)

Am I on the right path here?

As mentioned above, if you rent the movie through iTunes on your computer, you should be able to watch it on your Apple TV or sync it to your iPod. So that would be the optimal way to rent movies.

Cool! I know what I need to do now...

Thanks, Padraic, Felder71 and dmm219. Sorry I missed posts #4 & #5 when I was looking at the responses earlier...

Glad to know I can rent via iTunes and download to another device. AppleTV is the most recently added Apple device on the household wireless network and I'm still trying to wrap my head around what it can and cannot do and why I wouldn't rather just have a Mac mini with a huge-monster hd connected to my TV instead. But that's a conversation for another thread, I'm sure.

Sure glad you people are here! :)

You can only do this with SD rentals. You cannot rent HD movies on Itunes. You can only rent HD movies on your ATV. And they cannot be transferred at all. My bad for not pointing that out earlier. SD rentals are much more flexible.
