Currently I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009), Model Identifier: iMac10,1

I plan on buying a Macbook Pro this year, maybe even this week. If I buy now, it will probably be the 13".

I need the laptop for a beginning programming class at school. I need the additional monitor space (run as an extension, not a mirror), to make the coding process easier for me.

Ultimately, I will probably be buying a Dell Monitor, probably 23"-24".

But for now, if possible, I will use my iMac as a second monitor.

Is this possible and easy enough to do? If so, what cable do I buy?

Thanks,

Zeppo

Your iMac does not support Target Display Mode.

Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

iMac Model
iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
iMac (27-inch Mid 2010)
iMac (Mid 2011)
iMac (Mid 2012 and later)
Note that the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) does not support Target Display Mode.

Unfortunately this iMac does support target display mode, but the good news is that Dell is running a promotion on their refurb monitors until tomorrow: 30% off and free shipping from the Dell Outlet store with code RWTD2T4SCRKP0X.

I'm a big fan of the value of Dell monitors. I have 2 24s on a mini and another 24 as an external for my rMBP.
