Looking at the base iMac 5k at 1800$, I don't understand how the 5k display can be priced at 1300$. Any reason why it's so expensive?

If they release a 5k 27" Apple monitor, is it possible that it could be cheaper, maybe around 1000$ like their previous displays?

I think it is very unlikely. The best hope there might be Apple releasing both 4k and 5k displays, with the 4k being substantially cheaper than the 5k.

Thank you both for your answers. You're both probably right.

At the same time, if you look at the entry price of the 5k iMac, it is going down over the years: 2500$(2014), 2000$(2015) and 1800$(2017). And Apple/LG did sell the LG 5k at 1000$ for some time and they sure were making profit out of them anyway.

I think it is very unlikely. The best hope there might be Apple releasing both 4k and 5k displays, with the 4k being substantially cheaper than the 5k.

An Apple 27" 4k at a decent price would be great though! But they would probably follow their 21/4k 27/5k pattern...

There have been rumors of an 8K Apple display, but regardless I highly doubt it'll be something more affordable than LG's offerings.

It'll be very pretty, however.

you don't want an 8K display. think about what you would need to drive it properly.

It's probably going to be a 32-40" 8K screen (according to the rumor and firsthand source report), so expect it to be way, way more than the LG that's out now. I bet it will be between 2999-3499

Don't have actual links at the moment but here is what we know for sure:
1) Schiller himself confirmed that a new "Pro Display" will be releasing alongside the new modular Mac Pro in 2018-2019
2) There are a couple leakers in the mac pro section here, one of them talked about how he saw the screen in person when visiting Apple HQ and guestimated the size to be 32-40".
3) There was a photo (i think I saw on reddit) of a thin silver screen in a testing facility at Apple HQ, the same size as mentioned above, with additional information from the poster that it was an OLED screen and one of the prototypes for what Schiller described as the new "Pro Display"

So all of it adds up to a new Pro Display releasing in 2018-2019, 32-40" OLED, and probably multiple thousands of dollars.
